All Music Magazine UK’s, Billy Seagrave, made his way to the brilliant New Century Hall in Manchester to capture the rising star that is Brooke Coombe The packed to capacity venue, eagerly anticipated a night of indie, soul, and funk-infused guitar music.
This particular gig was a rescheduled show, with Brooke unfortunately having to cancel the original date. However, the excitement was palpable as the rising star, garnering rave reviews and an ever-expanding fanbase, took the stage with support from Ellur and Liverpool’s own Casino.
Casino, the Liverpool band claiming to be the “bastard sons of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding,” kicked off the show with their infectious mix of classic Motown and Stax, modernized for today’s audience. The crowd enthusiastically embraced the polished performance, dancing to the groovy rhythms, while frontman Dillon Kelly’s powerful vocals and witty banter left a lasting impression.
The main support acts were equally remarkable. Ellur, the northern indie-pop artist, catchy guitar-driven songs with honest and relatable lyrics. Her set, including tracks like “Burn it all down,” “Boys,” and “Satellites,” showcased not only her dynamic voice but also her bubbly personality. Ending on the powerful note of “The Woman,” Ellur left no doubt that she is a rising force
Brooke Combe, the Scottish singer-songwriter and Best Female Breakthrough Artist at the Scottish Music Awards 2021, took the stage to cap off the night. The venue buzzed with anticipation as Brooke, known for her viral bedroom cover versions, enchanted the audience with her soulful voice.
Influenced by artists like Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone, Brooke engaged the audience with familiar hits like “Talkin’ bout heartaches,” “Guilt,” and “Lanewood Pines.” Backed by a talented band, she seamlessly transitioned between genres.
Brooke shared anecdotes, creating a real connection with the fans. From recording covers in her bedroom to standing on the New Century Hall stage, she narrated her journey, making the crowd feel like accomplices in her musical evolution.
As the set neared its end with “Miss me now” and “Redbone,” the beautiful “Are you with me” brought the curtain down.
