The Steelhouse in Omaha, Nebraska, continues to impress us with its incredible lists of performers. On July 21st, 2024 Live Nation, which is the Steelhouses exclusive promoter, gave us a threesome of artists that would be tough to duplicate anywhere. Upon entering we were given our instructions. The first three songs in the pit for Return to Dust, then for Tigercub and Chevelle, we can shoot the entire performance from anywhere in the house after the first three in the pit. Don’t normally get this kind of access. Another impressive thing about the Steelhouse is the people. It was like I was invited to their house for dinner. They are simply so inviting.
To kick things off, Return to Dust brought their grunge-invested sound from L.A. to the Steelhouse crowd. They were an instant sensation as they brought back the great rock and roll sound of the 90s fused with their own modern touch. Return to Dust recently released their debut self-titled LP to fabulous reviews. Just one spin of this record and you know exactly what this band is about. It’s a thrilling compilation of songs that incorporate great guitar work, smashing percussion with vocals that can compare favorably with any of the 90s grunge bands from Alice in Chains to Zoe. Throughout their entirely too short of a five-song set, they showed upper-level talent and sounds that will forever be embedded in my mind.

This is my 2nd time covering Tigercub. I covered them when they opened for Porno for Pyros, but for that coverage, I was the photographer only. This time, I get to tell you how great this band is. THIS BAND IS GREAT!!. I could leave it at that and hope you trust what I’m saying but I’ve got more to say. The band is witty and likable. They are 13 years into their career and about a year ago their 3rd full length The Perfume Of Decay was released. To this day it is required listening. The shoegazing sounds of it are my particular favorite. The guitar solo on the title track is an absolute killer and even more so live. It was far and above the song of the night. The hungry crowd ate up every morsel of sound that Tigercub plated. Lead vocalist Jamie Stephen Hall asked if there were fans of the band in the crowd. There was a bit of a roar. Then he asked if there were new fans and the roar got louder. He said he had to ask as he is a bit of a narcissist. Jamie introduced us to Charles, who was replacing Jimi who was stuck in the U.K. over what Jamie called some bureaucratic B.S. They are an intriguing band in that they can go from hardcore metal to shoegaze to alt-rock to psychedelic all within one song. Not bad for a three-piece band. In that manner, they bring to mind another three-piece band whose sound-filled stadiums and arenas around the world. I’ll leave it to you to figure out to whom I’m referring and take your time doing so. There is no rush

In 1995 Chevelle was formed. In 1999 they released their first album Point #1. Twenty-two years later they released NIRATIAS which represents lead vocalist Pete Loefflers fascination with space travel. Travel is a perfect way to describe this band. Over the years they have had 9 studio albums, 7 number 1’s, 17 top 10’s, 5 million in U.S. record sales, and even more worldwide. As they traveled from decade to decade they have consistently brought us rock anthems for the ages. Their stage show is a joy to behold. They have a way of commanding an audience with their energy and hard-driving sound. Fans were singing along, I say singing, but they were actually screaming along. Definitely one of the loudest crowds I’ve been a part of. Chevelle played the hits, but none bigger than “Face to the Floor” which resulted in total crowd participation. When the last song was played the venue slowly emptied as most of us were just too exhausted to rush to the exits. On my way out I heard many of the fans praising the show they had witnessed. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday in Omaha.

Wasn’t good enough to be on stage as a performer, so the next best thing was to photograph the people who are. Shooting my R6’s is nearly as great as holding my Strat. Getting up close to an artist and feeding off the crowd is exhilarating. Concert photography allows me the opportunity to capture a once in a lifetime live moment and then share it socially.
