Alive Festival Day 2 was just as beautiful as Day 1. People started filing into the main stage around 3:00 pm. People were either getting their chairs set up on the hill or heading down to camp out at their spot near the main stage. David Leonard was supposed to go on at 4:20 pm, but as the time approached, no one came on the stage. Instead of David Leonard, Seph Schlueter came out to play a few songs for the crowd.
Seph’s set was simple, authentic, and acoustically styled music. He sang three songs for the receptive crowd. His songs were more worship-oriented. Seph started his set with the song “Running Back To You.” He then sang a new song, called “Holy, Worthy.” Seph ended his set with a song about gratitude called, “Counting My Blessings.”
The next artist to take the stage was also not the expected David Leonard. Some were questioning if David was here, but others had seen him, so people were curious as to the delay. Caleb Gordon from Day 1 took the stage next to hype the crowd up for the rest of the artists. He played several tracks, one of which was his viral “War.” Other tracks were “God is Good” and “Way to Blessed.” Caleb seemed even more comfortable this time on the main stage, and the crowd was receptive to the change. Some even chanting for his new song that dropped during Alive Festival called “Maintain.”
The question of the afternoon was answered after Caleb left the stage as to why David Leonard had not taken the stage. There had been a tech outage due to a cyber security issue that affected mobile payments, apps, and flights. Andy Mineo was supposed to be at Alive, but when the outage happened, Andy was left stuck in the Atlanta airport. This was announced at the festival via a video message from Andy Mineo played on the stage screens.
David Leonard‘s time to take the stage had arrived, and he was performing in Riley Clemmon’s spot which was around 5:30pm. David Leonard is a worship artist that brought a folk-rock sound to the Alive stage. The sun was dipping low in the sky as the gritty country rock sounds of worship filled the amphitheater, creating a chill worship vibe.
David started with the song, “Every Hour” about needing the Lord. Then he sang “Good Lord.” Afterwards he introduced a new song titled, “God of this Place.” David also sang a song about the life of Jesus he did with Jon Reddick titled, “I Believe It (The Life of Jesus).” He closed out his set with “My Life is an Altar” including the worship song “Great Are You Lord.”
It was announced after David Leonard that due to Andy Mineo not being able to make it that Riley Clemmons and Jeremy Camp would be getting extended sets which made the crowd ecstatic. There were many who were of course disappointed to not be able to see Andy, but many chose to stay and see out Day 2, and Alive did all they could to fill the day with music.
Riley Clemmons took the stage next. Riley Clemmons took the stage next. Riley Clemmons continued her uplifting set with both high energy songs exuding her cheerful stage presence to powerful ballads filled with meaning. She sang “Church Pew” a homage to growing up in church and what she has learned through the years which went into the hymn, “Because He Lives.” Riley even introduced a new song, titled, “Jesus Cries” inspired by John 11:35, showing that even the son of God showed empathy and experienced pain. The final act of the night had arrived. Jeremy Camp was about to take the stage. The anticipation grew as a one-minute countdown popped on the big screens. Jeremy Camp has been a mainstay in Christian music. He has a variety of styles within his songs from more worship to rock, to contemporary. He manages to meld all these styles into a set that has everyone on their feet in excitement or hands raised in worship.
He started his set with a bang with “These Days.” Next was “When You Speak” which had confetti cannons bursting over the crowd. He kept the energy up with “Out of My Hands,” and even brought out the fog cannons with the high energy, guitar shredding, “Dead Man Walking.” He slowed things down with a more worship take on songs like “Christ in Me,” “Right Here,” and “Gratitude” made popular by Brandon Lake.
He took the tempo back up “Word of Life” and “Ready Now.” Jeremy also introduced fans to a new track on his most recent record, Deeper Waters. He sang the rock inspired “No Survivors,” which a lot of the audience knew already and was receptive to. The encore for his set was “Keep Me in the Moment.” This song is so uplifting and encouraging about not missing what God has for your life. Music and the appreciation of coverts and live music was introduced to me at an early age. I love the shared experience of live music. Christian Rock was a mainstay in my from early in my childhood to present day. My parents introduced me to the pioneers of Christian Rock, like Petra and White Heart. This only progressed me in my love of music and concerts. My musical preferences are a wide range of genres and artists.
While in college, I received my bachelor’s in communication. While in college, I had my own Christian Rock show on the college radio station. I also interned with two different radio stations. I always have had a passion for sharing music and musicians’ passion and artistry. That has since progressed into some concert photography and being able to capture that passion from bands on stage. I have be able to photograph many artists across the Midwest region.
