For more than six decades, Roger Daltrey has been the voice at the center of some of rock music’s most enduring songs. On Friday night at the XCite Center at Parx Casino, The Who frontmen demonstrated that age may change the setting, but it doesn’t erase the authority of a great rock singer.
Daltrey’s ‘A Great Night Out’ was less a traditional rock concert than an evening of musical storytelling. In the intimate 1,500-seat theater, there were no stadium-sized distractions. The focus was on the songs, the musicians and, above all, Daltrey himself.
The evening began with “Let My Love Open the Door,” setting an appropriately relaxed tone before the set moved into familiar territory. The Who classics were there; “Substitute,” “Who Are You,” “Squeeze Box,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Going Mobile” and, eventually, “Baba O’Riley.”
But this wasn’t simply a greatest-hits recital.
Daltrey mixed the expected Who material with selections from his solo career. “After the Fire” and “Giving It All Away” offered glimpses into his life outside The Who, while “Freedom Rider,” “The Boy in the Bubble,” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” “I Can See Clearly Now,” and ”Rockin’ in the Free World” were chosen for various reasons. For example, “Have you ever seen the Rain?” ensures John Fogerty receives the royalties he deserves since he won the lawsuit restoring his ownership of the Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog and “Rockin’ in the free world” just because he believes he sings it better than Neil Young.”
That variety was one of the night’s strengths. Daltrey approached the songs as living material. The arrangements allowed familiar numbers to take on a more intimate character, particularly in a room where the audience was close enough to see the expressions of the musicians onstage.
Of course, the biggest reactions predictably came with the iconic Who songs. “Who Are You” still carries its unmistakable swagger, while “Won’t Get Fooled Again” remains a formidable piece of rock theater and quite relevant for the current time we live in. And when the opening notes of “Baba O’Riley” arrived, the decades seemed to disappear for a moment.
Yet the most striking aspect of the evening wasn’t nostalgia. It was Daltrey’s willingness to acknowledge where he is now.
At 82, he doesn’t need to prove that he was once one of rock’s great frontmen. That history is already written. What made the performance compelling was hearing those songs through the voice of the man who helped create that history and seeing how he has adapted them to a very different stage of his career.
And that’s ultimately what made ‘A Great Night Out’ such an enjoyable evening. The songs remain powerful, the voice remains unmistakable, and the man singing them has accumulated something no special effect can manufacture: a lifetime of experience behind every lyric. For fans who grew up with The Who, it was a chance to hear an essential voice from that era again. For younger listeners, it was a living lesson in rock history.
Either way, the XCite Center audience left with what the title promised “A Great Night Out,” delivered by a performer who has spent a lifetime making rock music matter.
