Ottto brought Bastardane with them to the Cornerstone Berkeley in Berkeley California on September 2, 2024 . Also on the set was Captive State, which proved to be a worthy addition to the bill. This was going to be a great night, these two (possibly three) bands are a definite show stopper.
Captive State is a metal band from the Bay Area, and they really know how to rock. Right from the start, you could tell we were in for an awesome performance. They kicked off with a strong beat and maintained the energy throughout their entire set. They played tracks from their first EP, Love/Lost, and the crowd went wild. Even though their set only lasted around 30 minutes, the impact they made lasted much longer.

Bastardane started their set with “Imposter”, during in which Castor Hetfield pounded the drums and sang passionately. They performed “Temporary Lies” from their new album, Catatonic Symphony, and effortlessly settled into their groove. The crowd got hyped during “Grand Slam” and “Revolt”, and one guy in the crowd even said he loved it. As they smoothly transitioned into “Sweet and Cheap”, the crowd went wild and the crowd started jamming. The band kept the energy high as they moved into “Guilt Trip” and “Chum”. When they played “Catatonic Symphony”, the audience was electrified, whether they were slamming in the pit or rocking out near the stage. When they launched into “Lose My Brain”, they asked, “How are you doing?” and everyone screamed in joy. During the final song, “Above All”, everyone was hyped up and also a bit sad knowing that it was time for Bastardane to leave the stage, but the band Ottto was up next.

When Ottto hit the stage, insanity ensued, and they started off with “Ride Low,” the perfect song to start the set. The crowd went crazy with excitement and vigor when they played “Return,” the crowd was just ecstatic in their approval. The song “Cosmos” started slower but built with amazing guitar solos and insane drum lines that kept up the pace. “Hedgehog” followed, and the crowd showed their appreciation. It was full steam ahead into “Day of the Dead.” The star of the show was Ty Trujillo’s bass solo called “Ghost Rider,” which lasted around five minutes and was a splendid interaction, thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd. From there, they jammed into “Night Howlers” and “Rising Machines,” which started somber but rocked the crowd even more as they went on. “Sweating Pool” was a dominant song in its funkiness, ripped through with style. When they started “My Pain,” they began rocking and eased into a finale that was well worth the wait. “Skyscraper,” their final song, was a dynamic finish to the set, played with all the drive they could muster. What an awesome show to witness.

Photographer of about 10 years, I have been shooting concerts for about 8 of those years. I started to get serious about concert photography about 6 or 7 years ago and now try to shoot as many as I can. I shoot mostly rock but, have done some country and big band stuff. I love music and since I am nowhere close to being a musician, this is a way I can be a small part of what, in the words of Henry Rollins, “gets me through the highs, the lows and everything in between”.
