Hearing Teddy Swims‘s chart-topping hit “Lose Control” on the local Adelaide radio station in recent months instantly captivated my interest and made me eager to dive deeper into his soulful sounds and extensive catalogue. He recently released his debut album, “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1)’, and it has been receiving significant attention. Upon arriving at one of Adelaide’s premier live venues, Hindley Street Music Hall, it was evident that the love and commitment to Meg Mac and Teddy Swims were palpable on this brisk mid-week winter night. The 1800-capacity venue was already packed on three levels, with fans firmly positioned, eagerly awaiting the show. No one wanted to miss a moment!

Australian singer-songwriter Meg Mac opened the night to a chorus of cheers, particularly from young girls who were thrilled by her presence. They sang along with her songs, whistled, and gave their full attention to her enchanting harmonies with her sister, Hannah McInerney. Despite her short set, Meg’s powerful vocals and joyful songs left a lasting impression

After a brief intermission, the lights dimmed, casting an electric blue glow over the stage. A high-energy DJ track played, the crowd erupted in cheers, and the anticipation was palpable. Teddy’s
band, Freek Feely, burst onto the stage with energetic drums and electrifying guitar riffs, setting the tone for the night.

Teddy sauntered onto the stage in a laid-back outfit: a red hat, rose-colored glasses, shorts, and colourful dangling earrings. The pyrotechnics that accompanied the first song were nothing short of spectacular! Equally impressive was Teddy’s raspy, soulful voice that resonated throughout the music hall as he performed his opening songs, “Goodbye’s Been Good to You” and “What More Can I Say.” His live performance mirrored the perfection of his radio hits, delivering meticulously crafted and feel-good vocals.

Teddy introduced his band, Freek Feely, as “his best friends in the world.” This tight-knit group showcased powerful keys, riveting guitar solos from three guitarists, and strong, rhythmic drum beats that elevated each song. Before introducing his new song, “Hammer to the Heart,” Teddy shared his one rule for the show:“Stay with it,” a phrase from his Atlantic home, emphasizing safety and togetherness. The crowd responded with shouts of “We love you, Teddy!” He reminded everyone to stay hydrated and look out for each other.

He performed “I’ll Never Know,” displaying his vulnerability and eagerness to connect with his fans, sharing his life lessons about accepting what you can’t control. The single white spotlight on him added an emotional depth to the performance. Expressing his gratitude, Teddy thanked Adelaide for their unwavering support, saying, “These are the moments I am going to remember for the rest of my life!” before seamlessly transitioning into “All That Really Matters.”

As Teddy delved into his repertoire, it became clear that the audience connected deeply with his heartfelt lyrics and soulful voice, singing loudly, hugging their loved ones, waving, and swaying along. His cover of Shania Twain’s “Still the One” was a unifying moment, with the entire crowd singing in harmony. The highlight of the night was fast approaching: “Lose Control.” The encore began with moody guitar riffs and warm orange lighting. The instantly recognizable keyboard intro gave way to Teddy’s powerful, soulful voice, backed by seamless guitar riffs. Teddy and his best friends concluded the set with “The Door,” as confetti rained down on the ecstatic crowd, leaving the room buzzing with energy.

Teddy Swims exceeded all my expectations. His connection with the crowd was profound, making it clear why everyone was so eager to arrive on time. This was a concert not to be missed!
