The Tedeschi Trucks Band, which was formed 16 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida is both dynamic and versatile as they really don’t occupy a single genre. The band could be described as rock, blues, and soul. The Tedeschi Trucks Band is led by Rock and Blues power couple, Susan Tedeschi with seven Grammy Nominations and Derek Trucks, who Rolling Stone Magazine ranked #16 on their 2011 list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” The latest album, Future Soul is a complete showcase of the 12-piece band’s flexibility. This 11-track album was produced by Mike Elizondo (Twenty One Pilots, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Carrie Underwood) and co-produced by Trucks and can arguably be their finest record to date.
The recording starts with “Crazy Cryin’, ” a funky and soulful track with layered vocals from Tedeschi and the backup singers, and Trucks strong guitar lyics. It’s a is a great start to the album, teasing the listener to question what’s next?
The second song, “I’ve Got You” is a soulful dance vibe that starts out acoustically, then with Susan’s soulful voice, and ends with Derek’s guitar breaking through in a Allman Brothers-esque guitar lead. There are so many layers to this song, as it can only be produced with a band the size of Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Next is the track “Who Am I” Tedeschi’s vocals really shine through in this beautiful love ballad seemingly singing about her and Derek.
The fourth song, “Hero” is a rocking blues song where Susan’s vocals stand alone reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, again showing her chops that got her a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Track five, “What in The World” starts out acoustic and the vocals reminiscent of songs of the likes of Joni Mitchell or Carly Simon. Then add in Truck’s amazing slide guitar; this song has plenty of soul and body.
The sixth song and title track, “Future Soul” is just coming right at you with Susan belting out the lyrics in this rock song that includes mounds of soul in it. You can feel the entire band just dancing and jamming coming through the music.
Son number seven,”Under The Knife” really changes the tempo and dynamic with vocals from Mike Mattison on this smooth groove with strong backing vocals carrying the vibe. Really a great track, further diversifying the contents of this collection, complete with outstanding slide guitar via Mr. Trucks.
This recording has it all and showcases the depth and versatility of an outstanding group of musicians led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. This album may even chart higher than 2012’s #12 Made Up Mind and 2013’s #11 Revelator. Tedeschi’s delivery is always compared to other singers in the past, which is a bar that is impossible to replicate, but her depth and originality really can’t be compared as they are uniquely her own. Dereek Trucks is one of the highest-rated contemporary guitarists, but his slide work is unprecedented in the past and present. Tedeschi and Trucks would make a great band on any palette, but add in a backing band of 10 accomplished musicians, and it’s pure magic. Have no doubt, the album Future Soul has plenty of “Soul In It”
