The self titled debut album Sometimes Y was released March 11, 2022 on Slumerican records. This unlikely collaboration between Hip Hop Rapper Yelawolf and Outlaw Country artist Shooter Jennings breaks all the traditional rules. Forget styles and genres, this is a fresh and a very special combination of just good music and some deep, mostly dark lyrics. Yelawolf is an American hip hop rapper that has been signed to Eminem‘s record label Shady Records. Shooter Jennings is the son of Country Music icon Waylon Jennings and has previously collaborated with Billy Ray Cyrus, Brandi Carlile, and Duff McKagan to name a few.
The album starts with the title track “Sometimes Y” a rap/hip hop song in the traditional fashion and style. The song starts with a count down almost as an introduction to the explosion of sound contained in the album. The next track, “Hole in My Head” may be my favorite on the album and has a definite country vibe. “Rock & Roll Baby” gives a glimpse of the dark side of poverty and social disparity
The heaviest rock and roll track on the album is “Make Me A Believer” and the guitar leads are just incredible. A true piece of stadium rock!
“Shoe String” is a rap single that is poetry backed by country hip-hop music which reminded me of early Jim Morrison’s “An American Prayer.” The next track and might just be the most powerful on the album “Radio” is an upbeat tempo song that highlights addiction and the carnage that follows in the wake.
In all, the music is uplifting, and the lyrics show the dark side of poverty and social disparity. The messaging is very strong and easily relatable for so many in today’s society.
This multidimensional genre is powerful, enjoyable, and the collaboration of these two artists is off the rails!
