The Mersey breeze blows in another cloud of poignant song writing magic as re-emerging Liverpool singer-songwriter, former The Aeroplanes front man, Chris Kearney adds a new cut to the city’s classic songbook in the form of Can’t Sleep For Dreaming. Teasing kindling into flame with intimate folky balladry before warm electric piano and brass draws the song to become a heartfelt, smooth soul blaze, Kearney’s return conjures fresh magic from the time-honoured tale of infatuated yearning.

A heady storm of music industry musing and media attention lashed at the sides of The Aeroplanes as the four-piece found their feet in the 00’s. The four-piece released their only album, Broken Hearts and Maladies in 2008 and drew personal attention from Hollywood legend, Jeff Bridges to be included in his 2005 film, The Moguls, before splitting in 2010. Kearney’s initially low-key return, heading back onto stages in his home city and quietly releasing a run of singles over the last two-years looks set to pick up pace in 2023.

Linking with leading indie label, Modern Sky – home to Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band and The Coral – and settling into a healthy working partnership with producer, Steve Parry, the emergence of Can’t Sleep For Dreaming fuels expectation of Kearney surpassing his previous form as a songwriter. The song’s essential humanity, singing truths known to every listener, is dressed in instrumentation reminiscent of Stanley Road-era Paul Weller and the essential, deep soul-mining classics of Van Morrison.

Kearney reflects on the track by saying: “The track was actually written a few years ago and recorded as a solo acoustic demo.  Modern Sky booked me in with Steve Parry and I decided to record this because it was always a favourite live.  Steve put down the beautiful brass parts and he actually did the drum track as I was having a break.  It is a simple song about dreaming keeping you awake.”

Hearing the golden eras of song craft run through his latest output, listeners may be less surprised to learn that Kearney’s artistry has passed through the filter of truly great soul songwriters. Visiting Memphis in 2017, the result of a songwriting contest, Kearney wrote and performed with Stax Records recording legend William Bell. Stepping into the recording both in Sun Studios for the sessions, the proximity to 20th Century songwriting icons wasn’t lost on Kearney as he returned home with renewed focus.

Kearney returns to live performance in 2023 with dates due to be announced. To be the first to find out about upcoming dates and release news, connect with Chris Kearney online at:
