Akon, born Aliaune Thiam on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, is a globally renowned music artist known for his unique blend of R&B, hip-hop, and dancehall influences. However, he spent much of his childhood in Senegal, West Africa, before returning to the United States as a teenager.

Akon gained widespread recognition with his debut album “Trouble” in 2004, which featured hit singles like “Locked Up” and “Lonely.” His sophomore album, “Konvicted” (2006), solidified his status as a superstar, spawning chart-toppers like “Smack That” and “I Wanna Love You.”

 

 

Beyond his solo work, Akon has collaborated with numerous artists across various genres, including Eminem, Lady Gaga, and T-Pain. He is also recognized for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through his Akon Lighting Africa initiative, which aims to provide electricity to millions of people in Africa.
