WORDS BY LLOYD WAKELING
The Amazons “How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me?”
Released 09/09/22 On Fiction Records
Dotted with simple themes and an anthem guise, the new album from The Amazons, rips a hole in the fabric of complacency and delivers an array of tracks that, one after the other, stamp an indelible footprint on the musical ‘now’.
Delivered with a crash-bang-wallop, this album excites and in some ways turns back the clock to a purer, rockier age that preempts the so called modern ‘pop’ song. Entangled amongst its limbs are nuances of production that have steered the very liners that are Coldplay, Elbow and even Bad Company, if I may delicately show my age. Multi layered, yet expertly reined, it feels fresh and designed for a live audience who will appreciate the musicianship of four young men from Reading.
It is a third offering from the band, and tells its stories about life and intimacy, with a steady hand, powerful vocals and perfectly aligned harmonies, that tether together, what is an expertly formed and articulate collection of songs. Yes there are anthem themes and ear worm goings on, but it all works as a collective and there is enough subtlety within the lines to create the intimate as well as the arm raised, punch the air noises.
As a stand alone piece of work, I genuinely believe that this album will be a favourite amongst the few and the many, because it exudes class and lives openly amongst its contemporaries, so grab a seat and catch a listen, The Amazons are in the room!
