Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham‘s new album Cunningham Bird—out on October 18, 2024—is a full reimagining of the 1973 Buckingham Nicks album, the lesser-known collaboration between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks before they joined Fleetwood Mac. This tribute album breathes fresh life into the original, offering an indie-folk twist that stays true to the essence of the classic while exploring new territory.
Bird and Cunningham’s collaboration feels natural, as both artists are known for their virtuosic musicianship and nuanced approach to songwriting. While the tracklist remains identical to Buckingham Nicks, the arrangements are reinvented, with a more modern, minimalist feel. Mike Viola, who produced the album, brings a delicate balance between innovation and reverence for the original material. The record features Griffin Goldsmith on drums, adding rhythmic textures to complement the distinctive voices of Bird and Cunningham.
Early singles like “Crying in the Night” and “Crystal” give a glimpse of this duo’s seamless chemistry. Cunningham’s emotive vocals bring a haunting dimension to the songs, while Bird’s violin and multi-instrumental prowess weave subtle, yet evocative layers. Their interpretation is marked by a balance of respect for the original work’s exuberance and the confidence to add their unique imprint
This record offers not just a tribute to an underrated album but a transformative experience, making it relevant and resonant for today’s listeners. Fans of both artists, as well as lovers of Fleetwood Mac, will find something to appreciate in this thoughtful, atmospheric reimagining.
