SLOW PULP
‘YARD’
ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 29TH 2023
Slow Pulp‘s latest album, “Yard,” marks an exciting new chapter for the band as they make their debut on the ANTI- label. Comprised of Emily Massey on vocals and guitar, Henry Stoehr on guitar and as a producer, Teddy Mathews on drums, and Alex Leeds on bass, Slow Pulp delivers a mesmerizing blend of lo-fi dreamy rock with fuzzed-up guitars and soft distortion.
What’s particularly intriguing about “Yard” is that it was written in a country cabin and self-produced on a farm in rural Wisconsin. This rustic setting seems to have seeped into the music, giving it a raw and organic quality. The album explores themes of love, self-validation, self-reflection, and obsession, providing a depth of emotion and introspection that resonates.
At times, “Yard” ventures into dreamy shoegaze territory, enveloping the listener in a swirling sonic landscape that’s both immersive and contemplative. It’s a beautiful slice of Americana that captures the essence of the American heartland while adding its own unique twist.
Emily Massey’s vocals take center stage on this record, showcasing both strength and vulnerability in equal measure. Her delivery calls to mind shades of Hole and Verruca Salt, adding a distinctive edge to the album.
One of the standout tracks on this album is the beautiful piano ballad “Yard,” which offers a stark contrast to the more guitar-driven tracks. It showcases the band’s versatility and their ability to experiment with different sounds and moods.
The sonic landscape of “Yard” is bathed in a brilliant hazy vibe, with each track filled with cool guitar hooks that draw you in and keep you engaged throughout the album. Slow Pulp has crafted a cohesive and captivating listening experience that flows seamlessly from one track to the next.
“Yard” by Slow Pulp is a highly enjoyable album that demonstrates the band’s growth and musical exploration. It’s a compelling blend of lo-fi dreamy rock, shoegaze elements, and Americana influences, all held together by Emily Massey’s compelling vocals. With its rich sonic textures and introspective lyrics, “Yard” is a must-listen for fans of indie and alternative music. I thoroughly enjoyed this record
