As a long-time fan of The Zutons, I eagerly awaited the release of their latest album, “The Big Decider.” The album was recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios and produced by the dynamic duo of Nile Rodgers and Ian Broudie. This album marks the band’s first collective effort in 16 years.
Right from the start, “Creeping On The Dancefloor” sets the tone for the record with its nostalgic blend of 70s guitar riffs and infectious handclaps. It’s evident that “The Big Decider” is a journey back to the golden age of dance-infused rock. Throughout the entire album, there’s an unmistakable 70s disco vibe fused with the Zutons’ signature indie-pop energy. The sound is both cool and vibrant, reminiscent of long summer days.
The album is full of of earworm choruses that stick with you long after the music stops. The influence of Nile Rodgers and Ian Broudie can be heard on every track, with lush layers of sound, slick strings, and the Zutons’ trademark wall of sound creating a rich sonic sound.
While “The Big Decider” doesn’t reinvent The Zutons’ sound, it certainly showcases their evolution. Nile Rodgers brings his disco-funk sensibilities to the table, but at its core, this album is still very much The Zutons being The Zutons. However, this familiarity doesn’t detract from the album’s enjoyment. Instead, it feels like catching up with an old friend who hasn’t lost their spark.
Overall, “The Big Decider” is a solid addition to The Zutons’ discography. It may not be a groundbreaking departure from their previous work, but it’s a testament to their enduring talent and ability to craft infectious, feel-good music. With its blend of retro vibes and contemporary energy, this album is sure to please both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
