I think I’m becoming much more purist these days in that, I love to listen to a record that hasn’t been too over produced or played with, in essence allowing the artist to find their clearest and cleanest voice without a parade of marching musicians behind them trying to outdo the sanctity of the work.

Ultra Q have been allowed this luxury on their new album and whether it was intended or not, it absolutely works. Each track is an emotion that is bared to its bones, revealing an underbelly that isn’t afraid to show vulnerability, yet strong enough to cry and yell for all to hear. I like that it has an angry tone and that at times it lashes out at itself and the World, but then hasn’t all good angry music done that in the past?

Steeped in guitar rifts that would do well on a battlefield, I kept returning to many of the young guns who have gone before and recognised many a trait that will hold Ultra Q in good stead.

They play with a freedom that is exciting and although not new, their sound and emotion is unique to them and I can imagine that a live set would be a promise of an evening spent with the baton holders of the ‘don’t mess with me mister, or I might have to punch you in the nose!’ brigade.

My Guardian Angel is a great record from a great band and I for one can’t stop listening to it…
