Irish folk group Kingfishr, Eddie Keogh, Eoghan “McGoo” McGrath and Eoin “Fitz” Fitzgibbon released a 5-track EP titled “Shadow” on the 8th of March 2024 so i thought i’d sit down and give it a listen.

The title track starts the EP Driven by McGrath’s banjo plucks, Keogh’s beautiful Irish lilting voice is powerful as he sings “I love you” underpinned with some beautiful harmonies. Perfect start!

“Coward” slows the pace Keogh’s vocals dripping with pure raw emotion, the banjo is ever-present but the sound is fuller than the opening track and it feels like the EP is building nicely

“Leave”. starts with plucking guitars and banjo as Keogh asks “When you gonna leave” before it starts to build and Keogh’s vocals go up another level, so strong, so textured and the emotion is palatable,

The heartfelt lyrics and vocals continue on the next track “Shot in the Dark” as the intro of a harmonica sets the scene, before
a gentle banjo works its way in, sitting beautifully alongside Keogh’s warm vocal

The last track is “flowers-fire”. And this track is amazing as it builds and builds getting fuller and fuller, reminding me of Hothouse Flowers and Dermott Kennedy, Kingfishr truly shine on this track

All in all, “Shadow” is a great EP, with an outstanding vocal performance and outstanding musicianship. It’s a true snapshot of a band whose roots are firmly set in Irish folk but with their take on it, which makes it refreshing and as a young band at the beginning of their journey, you get the feeling that Kingfishr are destined for very big things,
