NOISE –
Not Until Tomorrow Night EP
‘Not Until Tomorrow Night’ is the brand-new EP from Glasgow four-piece NOISE, which sees a release date of September 22nd.
Given their choice of moniker and their claims to be ‘Glasgow’s loudest new indie band’ you’d be forgiven for expecting walls of noise, experimental sounds, and thumping drums. What NOISE deliver, however, is something very different.
The six tracks on this release cover the well-trodden middle ground of indie rock and would sit comfortably on the (probably digital) shelves of fans of Interpol, The Strokes and fellow Glaswegians, The Cinematics.
The EP is bookended by its two strongest songs, both covering a different dynamic and showcasing some diversity in the band’s songwriting skill. Opening with ‘Victor’, a song with impact and split personalities. It begins with staccato guitars, reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand and when NOISE vocalist, Luke Dolman hits his first note it’s clear who his influences are (there’s more than a hint of Julian Casablancas). Midway through the opening track it veers off into more thoughtful territory and it’s here that NOISE do their most subtle, and best work.
Second track ‘One Year’ strikes a plodding rhythm and has a chorus made for festival tent singalongs, whilst track three ‘Take Me (Back To)’ opens with the spirit of Interpol’s Obstacle 1.
There are occasional moments of guitar soloing which add a little punch to the mix but by the time the EP reaches its penultimate track, ‘Waltz’ the band have slowed things down again. Although the intent was meaningful it’s tempting to suggest the song could have been made slightly shorter to maintain interest. I found myself starting to drift after the 4-minute mark.
It’s EP closer, ‘ODAAT (Pt 2)’ that shows a more mature dynamic to the band’s songwriting. The use of old movie dialogue alongside NOISE’s musical backdrop is moving and creates the first real emotional moment of the EP. It’s a satisfying end to the experience.
NOISE are sure to grow their fanbase with this release which manages to showcase their talents and their influences. Based on this listen, the name and sound remain at odds with each other but maybe the live experience is another matter.
