It’s that time again, when our man on the ground Desh Kapur Editor/Photographer All Music Magazine UK spotlights a bands or artists he thinks are going to have a big 2024/25 bands and artists we think you should check out to stay ahead of the curve
So welcome to BIG WARM BED
Crafting laid-back yet wistful musings under the alias Big Warm Bed, Yorkshire-based songsmith Jacob Andrews has partnered with revered indie label Dance To The Radio for the release of his upcoming EP, with debut single‘Should’ve Seen it Coming’ arriving earlier this summer and receiving backing across BBC 6 Music (Emily Pilbeam) and the tastemaker community (So Young Magazine)
Having toured the globe as part ofFar Caspian’s backing band, Big Warm Bed navigates universal themes of friendship and loss through a tasteful retro-rock lens akin to Kevin Morby and Willie J Healey; with the musician set to take his live show on the road this autumn (following previous supports with Sam Evian and Cut Worms), including a debut headliner at Leeds’ Hyde Park Book Club, and festival slot at Left Of The Dial following his debut EP release
So All Music Magazine UK managed to fire some questions over to the band and they kindly answered them for us
AMM – What first got you into music? or Who inspired you to make music?
BWB – I always loved listening to music and my older brother, Dan, played guitar and drums. So they were always set up around the house growing up, then I just naturally gravitated towards guitar. I’m still useless on the drums, never caught the rhythm bug. I think I always liked making music, when I was real young I used to write down silly little verses and sing them in private, I’d get really embarrassed if someone caught me haha
AMM – tell me about your music journey
BWB – I started playing guitar when I was 10. My parents bought me a guitar for my birthday, Iam naturally left handed but I think I didn’t like being different by playing left handed soI asked them if they could exchange it for a right handed guitar, at least I think that’swhat happened, I don’t really remember.
AMM – How would you describe the music that you typically create?.
BWB – I tend to gravitate towards laid back guitar music, I started out creating really heavy fuzzed out guitar in my first band and as i’ve got older my tastes and style have changed into a more relaxed and easy on the ear sound.
AMM – What is your creative process like?
BWB – I’d say 95% of the songs I write start out on me just noodling around on the guitar whilst i’m just chilling around my apartment. Recently I bought a cheap yamaha keyboard that has some very basic synthesis built in so I’ve been starting out a lot of new ideas on that.
AMM – If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
BWB – Probably Phoenix, I have been a huge fan of them for as long as I can remember and just the chance to meet them to let them know how much I appreciate their music would be enough for me, don’t have to support em.
AMM – What is one message you would give to your fans?
BWB – Manhattan would be wayyyyy cooler if King Kong wasn’t killed, that’s just my honest opinion♂️
AMM – What is the most useless talent you have?
BWB – I’m a whizz at flipping beer mats
AMM – Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
BWB – I do and a lot of the time it is just me singing my own songs trying to figure out the vocal melodies for new songs i’m writing.
AMM – What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
BWB – I still have a full time job working in a coffee shop to pay the bills, so i’d have to see it would probably be working in coffee. Or something like working in finance or something i dunno. I’d like to think if i didn’t find a passion for music i would have found a passion for earning BIG BUCKS on the stock market
AMM – Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
BWB – I’ve been extremely lucky to tour around Europe and the United States in Far Caspian. However, my favourite venue in whole entire world is my home town hero Brudenell Social Club. In FC we played Paradiso Noord in Amsterdam that was a silly good experience, they tend to you hand and foot over there! With Big Warm Bed it’s very much still trying to get off of the ground with the live shows, I’d like to get my music out there in Europe and across the pond at some point in the future x But for now it’s gonna be a lot of chipping away on the home circuit i’m sure (with the exception of Left Of The Dial Festival in Rotterdam in October). I have a Leeds Headline on the 8th of October, Left Of The Dial straight after that on the 17th and 18th and then a London and Manchester show, both of which are yet to be announced!
AMM – What is your favourite song to perform?
BWB – I really like performing a new song called ‘Means So Much’ it feels good to play live with the band. My favourite song to perform from the upcoming EP is ‘Should’ve Seen It Coming’ it’s a nice upbeat song to get the crowd go in!
AMM – Which famous musicians do you admire?
BWB – I’m a huge admirer of Chris Cohen and Sam Evian respectively, both are so unique with their sound and both produce their own music which i really love and respect. Big fan of Paul McCartney. I love Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and of course french royalty Phoenix.
AMM – What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
BWB – I was always quite well behaved as a child, or at least I was good at going under the radar if I did anything particularly naughty. One time in my teens I had friends a round at my mums house, we were drinking a little too much and one thing led to another and my mums tv got smashed. I also broke my hand that night. Mum was not happy to say the least.
AMM – What is the best advice you’ve been given?
BWB – Nobody cares. I struggle a lot with worrying about what other people will think and that someone somewhere is always quietly judging everything you do when the reality is, nobody cares. People are too caught up in their own shit to care about what you do and what you’re doing and if there is someone somewhere judging you and talking shit, they don’t deserve the headspace. Just try and stay as true to yourself as possible and things can and will come good.
AMM – What’s next for you?
BWB – More music, more shows, more good times!
