ALL MUSIC MAGAZINE UK SPOTLIGHTS “KINGFISHR”

It’s that time again, when our man on the ground Desh Kapur Editor/Photographer All Music Magazine UK/Europe spotlights a bands or artists he thinks are going to have a big 2023 ; bands and artists we think you should check out to stay ahead of the curve

So welcome to KINGFISHR

Boasting a cinematic soundscape, they effortlessly combines elements of traditional folk music with lush textures and compelling, honest lyricism all with an indie edge, producing songs with  infectious melodies that create an epic sound that you can already imagine shaking the core of arenas up and down the country.

The new single ‘Heart In The Water’ is the first release following the announcement of their support slot on George Ezra’s UK & Ireland summer tour, and festival slot at Sea Sessions.

Aptly named for the bird which frequents the river Boro in Eddie’s native county of Wexford, Kingfishr are an exciting proposition. The Limerick-based tio pride themselves on their musical independence,  producing, writing and recording and all of their own music at their home studio, which happens to be located on a dairy farm.

Eddie, McGoo & Fitz all met in 2017 when studying engineering at University of Limerick, with debut single ‘flowers-fire’ released the week before their final exams. They followed this up with sophomore release ‘eyes don’t lie’. Citing the likes of U2, Hanz Zimmer and Ben Howard as influences, the grand atmospheric nature of these artists can be found deeply woven into the Kingfishr DNA.

The boys have an exciting year ahead with support slots on George Ezra’s UK & Ireland tour and a run of festival dates at Sea Sessions, Lytham Festival & The Indie-pendence. With all of this plus plenty of new music on the horizon. Kingfishr are certainly one’s to watch in 2023.

Kingfishr are Eogan “McGoo” McGrath, Edmond Keogh and Eoin Fitzgibbons

FOR FANS OF Mumford and Son, Ben Howard, U2

1 What is the story behind your name?

Eddie, our lead singer spent his childhood in Wexford rowing on the Slaney and the tributaries surrounding it. “That area is full of kingfishers, they remind me of growing up, so we settled on that”

2 Who inspired you to make music?

Our friends more than anything. The support of the people around us. I mean we’ve got lots of musical inspirations, Mumford, Dermot Kennedy, Snow Patrol. So all of the above

3 How did you all meet?

We met studying engineering in the University of Limerick. So we started out pretty far from music.

4 How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Big. We grew up listening to movie soundtracks, where the atmosphere surrounding the story is as large a part of the narrative as anything. We wanna explore that in what we’re creating.

5 What is your creative process like?

It’s constantly evolving, but a lot of the time it’s the three of us in our kitchen in Tipperary riffing off one and other. Sometimes it’s a riff, sometimes a melody. Inspiration is a fairly random phenomenon, so just messing around is key.

6 If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Bon Iver.

7 What is one message you would give to your fans?

Whatever you’re afraid of doing is the thing you need to do.

8 What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

We’d be in various engineering based jobs, losing hair at a rate never before witnessed by human kind.

9 Tell us about your upcoming shows?

We’ve got a headline show in Limerick on the 25th March. It’s sold out, we’re so excited, other than that we’ve got the George Ezra shows for his UK & IE tour during the summer as well as lots of festival spots too. It’s gonna be a busy summer.

10  What is your favourite song to perform?

Probably Caroline, it’s not released, but it’s on the way.

11 What is the best advice you’ve been given?

We we’re told early on to follow our instincts, and to not make music for anyone else but ourselves.

12 What’s next for you?

Things are moving very quickly so that answer seems to change on a daily basis. Our headliner is the next thing on the radar that we really wanna focus on, then we’ve got a new release shortly after that. We’re busy boys 🙂
