ALL MUSIC MAGAZINE UK SPOTLIGHTS “THE NATIVE”

It’s that time again, when our man on the ground Desh Kapur Editor/Photographer All Music Magazine UK/Europe spotlights a bands or artists he thinks are going to have a big 2022/23 ; bands and artists we think you should check out to stay ahead of the curve

So welcome to The Native and indie rock band from Plymouth Featuring Charlie Noordewier (vocals, guitar), Ben Andrew (guitar), Tom Booth (bass), Harry Youngs (keys) and Fergus Segrove (drums).

The Native is brilliant songwriting with fresh appeal, an indie band for the modern age and their work hasn’t gone unnoticed, Big keys and subtle synth textures create an  unmistakeable hybrid of luminous melodies, chiming guitar, and driving rhythms. supported by Charlie Noordewier’s yearning voice,  transforming them into one of the country’s most sought after new groups. The Native truly are one of the bands that are going to kick some big goals over the next twelve months,

Having already been heralded with airplay at Radio XBBC Music Introducing and BBC Radio London. They’re also firing on all cylinders in the live arena. They completed a huge tour as guests to Bastille, while summer has already seen them hit festivals including the Isle of WightTruck and Chagstock

FOR FANS OF SAM FENDER, OASIS, MUSE AND THE STONE ROSES

So we decided it was time to have a little chat with the band to see where they came from, what they have been up to and what their plans for the future are.

1 What is the story behind your name?
We had our first gig booked but realised we didn’t actually have a name. ‘The Native’ was the first thing we all agreed on so we went with that – underwhelming story I know!

2 What first got you into music? or Who inspired you to make music?

Listening to our parents old records. From the minute we first listened to stuff from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s we were hooked and wanted to give it a go ourselves. Fleetwood Mac, Oasis, Led Zeppelin to name a few!

3 How did you all meet?

We all met at school and Fergus, who recently joined the band was introduced through a mutual friend of ours.

4 How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Indie/rock guitar music

5 What is your creative process like?

We usually start out with a few chords, a melody or a topic to write about. Once we’ve got a basic idea in place we start building up a demo on Logic. It varies from track to track but sometimes we do 4/5 demos of a song before we actually take it to the studio to record.

6 If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Kings of Leon

7 What is one message you would give to your fans?

Thank you for all the support! It still baffles us that we have people from all over the world listening to our tunes.

8 What is the most useless talent you have?

Break dancing

9 Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Don’t you want me – The Human League

10 What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

We’re still waiting for the music career to take off so probably the jobs we’re semi working at the minute! In pub’s, a cafe and a guitar shop.

11 Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

We were lucky enough to go on tour with Bastille earlier this year so have managed to tick off some of our dream venues already. The O2 in London was insane and also the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. That’s two we definitely won’t forget! I wouldn’t say we have any least favourite venues as we’re always happy to play anywhere we can. We’ve got 110 Above and Boardmasters coming up this weekend and then Reading & Leeds end of August

12 What is your favourite song to perform?

Time

13 Which famous musicians do you admire?

Sam Fender, Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C, Griff, Paolo Nutini, The War on Drugs

14 What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Tom losing two of his teeth

15 What is the best advice you’ve been given?

You can never be over rehearsed

16 What’s next for you?

Finish off festival season, get some more studio time and another tour booked in.
