It’s that time again, when our man on the ground Desh Kapur Editor/Photographer All Music Magazine UK/Europe spotlights a bands or artists he thinks are going to have a big 2023 ; bands and artists we think you should check out to stay ahead of the curve

So welcome to NICOLA HOIE

Nicola Høie released her debut tracks in 2022, starting with Secrets which got off to a flying start and was included in several playlists across the globe on both Apple Music and Spotify, including Best TikTok Viral Songs 2022 and Beats Of Tomorrow. The follow up, Never Buy My Love was also picked up on a variety of playlists including Spotify’s Fresh Finds and the highly regarded New Music Friday: Popjustice edit. Then came Skydiving which was swiftly added to Norway’s New Music Friday playlist and has been gathering momentum across Europe. Her acoustic EP then followed, accompanied by stripped back videos for Skydiving and Take My Number. Just last month, Nicola released the long awaited catchy up-tempo banger Take My Number.

Hailing from Norway and residing in Denmark, the soon-to-be London-based popstar can’t help but be inspired by her Scandinavian roots as well as looking to the UK and USA for a variety of influences. The young rising talent has spent the last 2 years honing her craft, working with some of the world’s best songwriters and working on her debut album between Stockholm, Berlin and Liverpool. Nicola Høie is undoubtedly going to be the name on everyone’s lips before long as this is only the beginning.

1. What first got you into music? or Who inspired you to make music?

I grew up around music. There was always music playing in the house and my dad is also very musical so I have always loved it ever since I can remember.

2. Tell me about your music journey

I have been working on my own music since I was 18 when we went to Liverpool. We went to Parr Street Studios and ever since then it’s been so much fun. We made a lot of music, I have done a lot of recording and spent a lot of time in the studio, which I love. I get so excited for each release!

3. How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I would say that it is fun pop music but with a little bit of an edge to it.

4.What is your creative process like?

I really enjoy the creative process but I can sometimes find it frustrating because the more I have worked on this the more of a perfectionist I have become. Seeing all the hard work that goes into a song though is pretty cool. There’s a lot that goes into it and there are so many details so you have to fully concentrate but I love it.

5. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

That’s a hard one to pick because there are quite a few but I think I’d have to say Taylor Swift. That would be so fun and she is an amazing performer.

6. What is one message you would give to your fans?

The one message I would give as cliche as it sounds is honestly to always trust and believe in yourself. No one will believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself first. Think of it this way, there is only one of you in this world. How cool is that? You’re rare <3

7. What is the most useless talent you have?

Haha – I’m not sure?! Maybe being able to sleep anywhere I am. I can fall asleep really easily and pretty much anywhere.

8.Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

I mean who doesn’t sing in the shower?! I love to sing ABBA in the shower – they’re my go to.

9. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Music is my first love so I don’t actually know! I think acting would be fun to try but I’m not great! I also think law would be really interesting to work in.

10. Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues?

I haven’t really started performing yet, but I’m so excited to get out there. I’ve spent so much time in the studio focussing on the tracks but I really hope to start getting out there to perform them live soon.

11 Which famous musicians do you admire?

There are a lot of musicians I admire and deeply respect. I think Taylor Swift is one of them, you can’t help but respect her because she is so passionate about what she does and puts everything into it.

12/ What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Haha – I don’t know if I want to admit it! I was a rebellious teenager when it came to rules so I did some dumb things. You sometimes have to learn the hard way!

13/ What is the best advice you’ve been given?

I have been given a lot of great advice but one of my favourites that always sticks with me is: Don’t wait for someone to love you, learn to love yourself first.

14/ What’s next for you?

There are so many exciting things being planned and are coming up, so you’ll just have to wait and see!
