Located in the heart of the hip and historic R Street Corridor in Downtown Sacramento, Ace of Spades is a 1000 person venue that caters to a wide variety of musical genres. Tonight’s selection, Prong, Obituary and Black Label Society.
Due to a delay on the highway, I missed seeing Prong. I was bummed because they always put on a solid set. From what I have heard, tonight was on target. The drummer, Aaron Rossi’s hands were raw and bloody. If that doesn’t tell you how hard they play, I don’t know what would.
Tommy Victor – guitar, vocals
Jason Christopher – bass
Aaron Rossi – drums
Next up was Obituary. They have been a powerhouse band in the metal scene for almost 40 years. These guys still shred. Obituary plowed through a 45 minute set with energy to spare. There is a reason they have been so influential over the years. They are just that good.
John Tardy – lead vocals
Donald Tardy – drums
Trevor Peres – rhythm guitar
Terry Butler – bass
Ken Andrews – lead guitar
Last but certainly not least, Black Label Society. Father Zakk Wylde, the pontiff O’ doom, lead the Sacramento, California chapter for a rousing mass this evening. Black Label fans live the life of Black Label. The crowd was a sea of Black Label Society back patches and battle vests. These fans are into it!
The band hit the stage hard and heavy. Zakk Wylde guided not only the band but, the audience as well through the hard hitting service. It was the fourth or fifth song he slowed it down a bit and took to the piano for a few songs. The first one , “Peddlers of death” started out with “Can…….You…….Dig……..It!”. I think everyone did. The last song on the piano was “In this river” a tribute song to Dimebag Darrel and Vinnie Paul. Back on the guitar, Zakk and band shredded through more favorites with Zakk changing guitars and paying tribute to each guitar every song. The custom double neck for “Bored to tears” was so awesome. The highlight of the night was the double guitar solo behind the head with Dario Lorina. That was really impressive! Before we knew it the show was over we were being ushered out to a classic Frank Sinatra song.
Black Label Society is:
Zakk Wylde – lead guitar, piano, lead vocals
John DeServio – bass, backing vocals
Dario Lorina – rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Jeff Fabb – drums

Photographer of about 10 years, I have been shooting concerts for about 8 of those years. I started to get serious about concert photography about 6 or 7 years ago and now try to shoot as many as I can. I shoot mostly rock but, have done some country and big band stuff. I love music and since I am nowhere close to being a musician, this is a way I can be a small part of what, in the words of Henry Rollins, “gets me through the highs, the lows and everything in between”.
