Bromheads Jacket, one of the leading lights of the Sheffield guitar scene that spawned the Arctic Monkeys in the 2000s, return with a brand-new single ‘The Grind’, out today.
‘The Grind’ shows that the band have lost nothing in the intervening years. It’s a fantastic return, an indie-punk anthem which is urgent and punchy like their best work. The lyrics are an up-to-date take on suburban life, sharply observed whilst being raw and relatable.

With original members Tim Hampton and Jono West back together the band are currently putting together a brand-new album, due for release later this year. The old chemistry is back, and after taking a long break from the music industry they reunited last year for some shows back home. This led them to the studio and now they’ve reconnected with the Sheffield scene of old, plugging into the rhythm of the city.
Their importance to what was a golden age of music in the Sheffield is not lost on Jon McClure of Reverend And The Makers –
“When Bromheads Jacket emerged as a key member of the Sheffield indie scene of the noughts, nobody knew how to pigeon hole them. Lead singer and songwriter Tim Hampton sang, not with a Yorkshire twang but in a thick Surrey accent. His band were heavier than everyone else. “The Streets with guitars” was about the best the music press could come up with to describe what was, at that point, a new sound. Fast forward 18 years and a plethora of post punk bands have adopted the sound. Some like the brilliant Idles have gone on to enjoy great success in the genre. Bromheads Jacket meanwhile spectacularly imploded in a haze of glorious self sabotage. Hampton’s honest assessment that they “fucked it up”. It’s hard to disagree. Now, they’re back with a bunch of new material, sounding better than ever, to rightfully reclaim their title as forerunners in the modern post punk scene. Some bands are incredibly popular, others are important and influential. Bromheads Jacket 2.0 might be both.”
With ‘The Grind’, the band have announced their return in style. They were widely supported by the likes of NME and Radio 1 previously, and will be announcing more live dates in the coming months.
