WORDS AND IMAGES NATHAN COLE
Fontaines D.C stop off at Manchester Victoria Warehouse for three nights as part of their ongoing uk tour. I’m heading down for their second night and Manchester is clearly ready. Selling out two nights so far, we’re in for an unforgettable weekend. It’s no surprise that fans are eagerly filling up the venue ready to catch one of their favourite bands.
Opening tonight is London band ‘Wunderhorse’ and everyone is ready and waiting to show their support. They kicked it off with ‘Poppy’ , lead singer Jacob Slator confidently bounces back and forward across the stage. Cheers echoed from the front of the crowd as he introduced their band. They have clearly built themselves a set of enthusiastic fans as they carried on singing along to the next tune.
They finished off their time on stage with ‘Leader Of The Pack’ with riffs that caught everyone’s attention and ended their set with a bang.
Screams for Fontaines DC to finally get themselves on stage didn’t stop as they walked to their place. Beers in hand they waved to their audience which lead to more devoted shouting. ‘A Hero’s Death’ sent the crowd jumping up and down with excitement and that was only a sign of how tonight would go. Clapping and chanting was overbearing between each song, nobody left the hall silent…
Lead singer Grian Chatten could not stay still. He marched across the stage as he belted out everyone’s favourite lyrics in that familiar Dublin accent that we’ve all grown to know. In each song and even when they were over he would fiddle with his microphone and pace across the stage in excitement. Throughout songs he would jump across his speakers as if they were a runway, denting them as he went.
New song ‘Jackie Down The Line’ was amongst the crowd favourites from their latest album released earlier this year. The already familiar lyrics Echoed through the venue and no line was not sung back to the band. An Irish flag waved through the crowd on the balcony throughout their performance, really showing off the enthusiastic fanbase they have built.
‘Boys In The Better Land’ was of course one of the most energetic songs for the audience. Mosh pits flooded the venue as people jumped around in a frenzy. They continued to entertain the crowd with his bouncy performance as he kept each person one hundred percent engaged. The venue was packed, not a space in sight. Making my way up to the balcony was a nightmare but totally worth it to see the whole crowd in the hands of this unbelievable band.
Fontaines finished with the powerful ‘I Love You.’ This was a fitting end to tonight’s Performance with the fast paced and meaningful lyrics belting out into the audience. Fontaines DC have delivered an unforgettable night and I’m sure it can only get so much better as they continue to the rest of the UK.
