“A Place You Grew Up In” perfectly captures Laveda’s knack for nostalgic dream-pop storytelling with a dark, unsettling edge. Fusing vocalist Ali Genevich’s impassioned and intangible vocals with grunge ‘90s driving guitars and shimmering synths that seem to hover just out of reach, the album’s title track was born out of the struggle that comes with resenting a place, yet feeling like you can never truly leave. As Genevich explains:
“”A Place You Grew Up In” is about the love/hate relationship I have with living in upstate New York. It’s this weird unnecessary internal struggle that I feel almost every day. There are so many reasons to love a place, but there are just as many reasons to despise it. Will I ever permanently leave? I’m not sure, it scares me. But staying here forever is almost more terrifying.”
The remarkable title-track of the band’s new album, ‘A Place You Grew Up In’, lands in-full today via VT/NY-based label PaperCup Music. An album that draws experience from the darkest of times and reflects in the half-light that comes with the dawning of adulthood, Laveda’s sophomore album presents 12 shimmering, sensory, and sensitive tracks to savour again and again. Tapping into all the angst and anxiety that accompanies coming-of-age during bleak and uncertain times, Genevich explains of the record:
“”A Place You Grew Up In” is like a time-capsule in my memory. 2020 and 2021 felt like adulthood had crawled out from a dark cave somewhere in the woods to slowly flood my mind with 24/7 anxieties. It began with the pandemic, then Jake’s mom who had been battling stage four cancer got worse. She passed on New Year’s Day 2021. There was a lot of grief paired with drinking. Many days felt monotonous, though some were filled with writing and demoing.”
Featuring earlier singles including the sun-drenched “Surprise”, antsy and ethereal “F***”and slacker-tinted “Troy Creeps”, almost all of the songs on ‘A Place You Grew Up In’ were written between late March 2020 and summer 2021, before being recorded by the band while staying on a ranch just outside of Los Angeles. Produced by Dylan Herman (Beck, Pynkie), the album sees duo Ali Genevich (vocals/guitar) and Jake Brooks (vocals/guitar/synths) joined by Laveda’s full live band, including Dan Carr (bass) and Joe Taruone (drums).
Alongside the release today, Laveda are delighted to announce an extensive run of US tour dates for April/May. Details as follows:
