REVIEW BY GIORGIA LYNCH
The Shoreham Ropetackle Centre was packed on the night of 2nd November 2022. Blockheads fans crowded the stage to listen to their upbeat mix of funk, New Wave, Reggae and Kitchen Disco ‘tonic for the troops’! With their latest line-up of musicians ready to go, everyone was in for a good night.
And it wasn’t only the crowd that was packed, the stage was also wall-to-wall full of a legendary cohort such as Mick Gallagher from The Clash, guitar virtuoso John Turnbull, all round brilliant musician and composer Chaz Jankel, John Roberts, bass player Nathan King, saxophone player Dave Lewis and new vocalist Mike Bennett. It’s never ending talent!
The night was filled with rousing versions of “Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick” and of course the cult classic “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” which has the brilliant rhythm section from John Roberts and Nathan King who certainly cover it with some pounding baselines, and I am hoping will become a permanent fixture.
Dave Lewis is so amazing on the saxophone and really brings life into tracks like Sweet Gene Vincent, which I had to say was so sensitively performed by Mike Bennett, who turned in a great performance and interacted well with both the band and the audience.
If you get opportunity to check out this ever enveloping show, I could not recommend it more highly.
So, with that said I will end by saying ‘oi oi’.
