There was an eerie quietness to the 5-minute walk from Hamilton Square train station to the venue, which for a Saturday evening didn’t bode well. However, on arrival at Future Yard, a crowded lively atmosphere awaited, proving just how popular and established the venue has become, since the easing of coronavirus restrictions.
Support for the show was provided by Liverpool protopunk-styled glam rockers, Psycho Comedy. Having seen the band numerous times since 2016, it’s safe to observe their inimitable character and charm emanates from their charismatic front-man, Shaun Powell. In his trademark red beret and coat (with the painted words, LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN on the back), the bleach-haired singer-guitarist lead the band through songs from their back catalogue including album, Performance Space Number One. With an especially tight (not to mention good-looking) band around him, Psycho Comedy contributed massively to a night of quality music! And Shaun, along with others, stuck around for the headline act and could be seen punching the air in appreciation at regular intervals.
Headline act for this show was the formidable Cumbrian juggernaut, The Lucid Dream. It was their first gig in quite a long time (we were told) and they were clearly happy to be back centre stage. And the Wirral faithful lapped it up with limbs aplenty. If heavy psych rock, thick motorik beats and a brutal battering of the senses is your thing, look out for these boys coming to a town near you (Austin, Texas)!
All in all, a most enjoyable night … back here for Bodega in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait!
