Described by The Line of Best Fit as having “A uniquely current take on indie-folk,” Manchester band The Deep Blue are simultaneously quietly outspoken and rebellious, their punk attitudes fused with hypnotically beautiful harmonies and intertwined instruments. Lyrically spanning small, detailed vignettes and musings to anthemic calls to arms, always deeply personal and reflective with strong elements of storytelling.
New emotive single Somebody’s Daughter is The Deep Blue’s response to the ongoing border crisis, as they explain:
“We feel alarmed by the current discourse around asylum seekers which is often dehumanising. With our song and music video, we have tried to combat the facelessness of the people attempting to seek refuge in the UK, when the government has not provided safe and legal routes for them. Rejecting the ‘us and them’ narrative and moving towards deeper empathy and compassion. The injustice of it is horrifying.
This song is our personal response to try and navigate the polarising and inhuman media narrative around borders and asylum seekers. 40% of global refugees are children. That’s 43.3 million children. Watching someone’s childhood be ripped away and reduced to a statistic is hard to stomach. All these young children are somebody’s child.”
The Deep Blue are Georgia Gage (vocals/guitar), Niamh Feeny (vocals/bass), Katie Emanuel (vocals/keys) and Sophie Wozencraft (drums) who came together in lockdown and burst onto the scene in May 2021 with the release of the first track from their debut EP Taking on Water. What followed was a flurry of support from key indie press such as DORK and The Line of Best Fit, and a follow-up EP Sugarcoat supported by their first UK tour which saw them selling out Camden Assembly, London and their home-coming show at Deaf Institute, Manchester. Sugarcoat EP saw continued press attention from key press tastemakers, with the EP’s title track anointed ‘Track of the Month’ on Amazing Radio, with some meaty airtime on BBC Radio 6 Music. This year the band added Y Not, Tramlines, Victorious, Greenbelt, Underneath the Stars and Truck Festival to their touring itinerary, having won the Band App vote to play the latter with winning votes coming from respected indie industry tastemakers such as Young Magazine and John Kennedy of Radio X.
The Deep Blue are currently working on their third EP (expected in 2024) as well as hitting the road with Lottery Winners in November, with a full UK headline tour newly announced for February 2024.
