Canadian DJ-producer MARIE DAVIDSON details her sixth studio album ‘City Of Clowns’, made in collaboration with Soulwax and Pierre Guerineau (Essaie pas, L’Œil Nu, Feu St-Antoine), out 28th February via Soulwax’s own DEEWEE label.
Earlier this year, Davidson debuted on the legendary DEEWEE imprint with her single “Y.A.A.M. (Your Asses Are Mine),” reuniting with the Belgian powerhouse Soulwax, who previously reworked Davidson’s acclaimed “Work It” anthem. Her all-out blistering club cut “Contrarian” soon followed, evoking Davidson’s heavier output.
Arriving alongside the announcement, Davidson shares “Sexy Clown”, a track rooted in the same push-pull of authenticity and perception. It explores Davidson’s conflicted feelings around her treatment as an outsider – someone whose vulnerability and mettle, candidness and humour – struggle to co-exist in people’s minds. In writing that song, though, she realised she’s no longer conflicted about it. She knows exactly who she is: “You like it when I’m mean, you like it Sexy? Don’t get it confused, cuz I do it for me,” Davidson humorously laments on the single. Paired with a lo-fi video shot in Milan, a city Davidson admires for its underground culture, the video aims to embrace our inner clown, the one who refuses to go by the rules. “Most people have a clown inside of them. Some are funny, some are shy, some are twisted, some are dark. The clown is the part of us that is dying to be seen, for better or for worse,” explains Davidson.
‘City Of Clowns’, marks a return to the club – but not as you know it. The techno thump and scathing spoken-word delivery of Working Class Woman resurface at points, but the pop structures and melodic sensibilities of Renegade Breakdown also remain. It’s a “strange” sonic blend even by Davidson’s own standards. “It’s definitely linking back to what I was doing pre-pandemic, but with a bit of an evolution,” she says. “I didn’t want to just repeat myself.” The sound and the spirit of the album are shaped, too, by the fact that Davidson has a new antagonist. This time it’s not club culture that’s coming for her sense of self, it’s Big Tech.
In summer 2022, when she was in the middle of making the album, Davidson began reading The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. It’s a bold account of technology as a new form of economic oppression that has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, unprecedented in power and free from checks and balances. The book consumed her, becoming a great source of alarm as well as inspiration. “In the time that has passed [since I read it], people have become more aware of how deep this is, but people have capitulated a lot too,” she says. “It’s changing the way we live. It’s literally changing our species – the way we interact with each other, and the way we interact with ourselves.”
