Its the first day of fall, but it felt like the middle of summer at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at San Diego State University where Modest Mouse performed in support of their new album, The Golden Casket. The college aged crowd that filled the amphitheater seats in the warm night were treated to a mix of old and new songs and while the Golden Casket hasn’t been out that long, many ion the audience seemed to know and love the new songs, singing along happily.
One of the more interesting moments happened right after the second song when lead singer Isaac Brock seemed to notice the photographers in the pit in front of the stage and asked if we were going to be there for just three songs, when one of the photographers told him that was the rule, he then informed us that we could shoot the whole show. While this was great news, due to the placement of the barricade and the way the photo pit is constructed, this 6’2″ photographer decided that ruining the view of any concert goer behind wasn’t worth it, so I left after the first 3 songs handmade my way to the Soundboard to get a few more wider, full venue photos, then settled in to enjoy the music along with everyone else.
