WORDS AND IMAGES BILLY SEAGRAVE
Oliver Tree, the multi-faceted, one-of-a-kind artist, brought his ‘Alone In A Crowd’ tour to Manchester. The show was a near sellout spectacle of music, comedy, and stunts, featuring support from Tommy Cash and Supercomputer.
First up was Tommy Cash, the Estonian rapper and singer who is known for his eccentric and provocative style. His performance was a visual feast, with elaborate dance routines, He rapped and sang over trap beats, mixing elements of hip hop, pop, and EDM. His songs ranged from humorous to dark, touching on topics like money, sex, and fame. He performed “Winaloto”, “X-Ray”, and “Little Molly”, All the time maintaining a great rapport with the rather enthusiastic crowd.
The Prequal to tonight’s headline was Supercomputer, a duo of electronic producers who delivered a set of catchy and upbeat tunes. Their sound was a mix of synth-pop, disco, and funk, with influences from Daft Punk, Justice, and Chromeo. They got the crowd moving with songs like “Feel Good”, “Digital Love”, and “Supercomputer”.
The main act of the night was Oliver Tree, the American musician who has gained international recognition with his songs “Life Goes On” and “Miss You”. He arrived on stage wearing his signature bowl cut wig, sunglasses, sitting on a couch with his back to the audience, where he watched a few short films, all filmed and edited by himself. He opened with “Miss you”, “Bounce”, and “One & only”. he then proceeded to play songs from his three albums: “Ugly is Beautiful”, “Cowboy Tears”, and “Alone in a Crowd”. He showcased his versatility as an artist, switching between genres like alternative rock, indie pop, hip hop, and dance. He also displayed his skills as a guitarist, pianist, and vocalist.
Tree’s performance was not only musical, but also theatrical and comedic. He interacted with the audience, cracking jokes, and telling stories. At times it seemed he was in the air as much as he was traversing the stage. The show was a series of three acts, all carefully choregraphed with an ever-present film backdrop. “Alien Boy” was of course a highlight as was “Cash machine”, and “I’m gone”. He ended the show with “Life goes on” and an encore of “Hurt”, his viral hit with Robin Schulz, and thanked the fans for their support.
The atmosphere of the concert was electric, with the fans singing along, dancing, and cheering. The O2 Apollo Manchester is the perfect venue for the show, which has a history of hosting some of the biggest names in music. The concert was a memorable experience for everyone who attended, as they witnessed the unique and creative talent of Oliver Tree and his support acts.
