PLASMAS – release their radiant debut EP ‘A Summer’s Day Can Break Your Heart’.
The band’s first extended-play release, the collection arrives with previous singles “What You Do To Me”, “See It Through” and “Notice” – alongside two unheard tracks “Stay Where You Are” and the EP’s ethereal, emotional closing track: “Happiness”.
Produced by Guy Galactic, ‘A Summer’s Day Can Break Your Heart’ plays out like a scrapbook of postcards or polaroid pictures from a handful of languorous and lucid summer days — the feelings, the friends, the love and the loss all captured with a gleaming sense of realism.
As frontman Ross McQueen explains:
“Having only released singles in the past, we wanted to create a full body of work that represents the foundations of our sound and shows people what we’re really about. We never really had a vision for the EP as such. Our vision begins and ends with each track, all little individual snapshots of moments in our lives.”
From the anxieties and isolation that comes with figuring out your sexuality on “What You Do To Me”, to the inevitable and impending breakdown of a failing relationship on “Notice” and the retro-tinted teen rom-com nostalgia of “See It Through”, the EP deftly taps into the collective sense of restlessness and instability that comes along with navigating life in your mid-20s. Ross adds:
“Pulling apart the layers, these songs all detail moving on from the challenges that life brings and accepting that things might not go the way you planned. We’re all in our mid-20s which is a transitional time, and these songs reflect both on the struggle and empowerment of letting go and moving on. I find it so interesting that, between three individual songwriters, we’ve managed to create a body of work that represents the challenges of life, relationships and mental health in such a coherent way without ever discussing it.”
With breezy rhythms, bare-all lyricism, gauzy guitars and woozy ‘90s pop sensibilities all bound together as a testament to the band’s deft musicianship and tight bond with producer Guy Galactic, who “always hones in on [their] creative vision and takes the music where it needs to be”, ‘A Summer’s Day Can Break Your Heart’ sees PLASMAS at their most vulnerable yet.
“We’re all so open with each other and that allows us to express ourselves freely and channel that openness in our work, which I think has resulted in a raw and totally honest EP,” explains Ross. “It’s so exciting to finally put this out, it feels like it really shows who we are as a band right now.”

PLASMAS are Ross McQueen (vocals, rhythm guitar), Conor McBay (lead guitar, vocals), Rory Strathie (synth), James Swan (bass) and Sam Walker (drums).
With a myriad of musical influences worn on their sleeves — from the ethereal dreaminess of Tame Impala or Wild Nothing, to the overcast vulnerability of The Cure and the festival-ready indie-rock of JAWS — the band first turned heads with their debut single ‘Look & See’, released during the first lockdown. With a few more tracks now under their belts, including guitar-fuelled banger “Always” (which featured on Spotify’s ‘Hot New Bands’ and ‘Lo-Fi Indie’ playlists) and Clash Magazine-backed “Is It Everything You Want?”, the band have received airplay on BBC Introducing Scotland and Amazing Radio and gained support from Fred Perry Subculture, Tenement TV and The Skinny amongst others.
Since the revival of touring, the five-piece have played a SOLD OUT headline show in Dundee, plus packed-out shows alongside Australian indie-rockers PLANET and Scottish rising-stars Swim School, as well as a “surreal” support slot alongside JAWS, a band that were one of the original inspirations behind PLASMAS’ sound.
Releasing their debut EP this Autumn, the band will be celebrating the release of ‘A Summer’s Day Can Break Your Heart’ with a special hometown launch show at Dundee’s Hunter S. Thompson venue on 18 November, with support from Sunstinger and Red Vanilla. Tickets go on sale this Sunday @ 10AM here.
