POLAR STATES RELEASE GLITTERING SELF-TITLED EP

FEATURING BRAND NEW TRACK ‘SAFE HOUSE’

Polar States have released their glittering self-titled EP, featuring brand new track ‘Safe House’

Spread across four tracks, it tells the story of where the four-piece currently sit sonically and showcases the mined intricate alt-pop and indie gems they have created more recently.

Speaking about the EP the band say, “The EP kept us alive. So we self-titled it. Lockdown hit and we thought, are we ever going to play live again? What the hell are we meant to do now? So we just started writing, pouring everything we had into the music, sending each other bits of demos.”

“Fast forward a year, we’re in Middle Farm Studios in Devon, having trailed our way through a dropbox of mp3s bigger than you want to imagine and far too many shaky wifi Zoom sessions with our producer. It’s tough picking a track-listing for what you think could be the last EP you ever put out, but somehow, sitting on our rehearsal room sofa, we’d managed to pick 4 songs that we felt conveyed what we wanted to show the universe.”

It’s also the first chance for fans to hear the studio recording of new track ‘Safe House’, the penultimate track on ‘Polar States’. Sparkling in the same way the previous singles have, you may be surprised to hear that ‘Safe House’ was initially inspired by more hip-hop tendencies before fleshing out into a guitar pop number. “This was written on acoustic guitar but I was listening to a lot of hip-hop at the time, and I ended up with this kind of rap thing going on in the verse,” singer Paul explains.

The EP also features previous singles ‘So Much Happened Since You Came‘ which marries indie sensibility with a vulnerable backdrop, ‘Waves (Beyond The Shore)‘, a glistening indie pop gem inspired by the band’s scenic Merseyside roots, and ‘Dust‘, which channels Polar States at their most quintessential, with intricate guitars making way for a triumphant crescendo. The EP, unlike previous material, was mostly written on the piano, and documents inner city life with escapism. There’s a cascading vulnerability running through it, “We knew some people would love it, and some would hate it but that excited us even more,” the band say.

‘Polar States’ is the next milestone for the Liverpool outfit, who’s online cult following saw exponential growth during lockdown. With the band’s WhatsApp group hitting thousands of messages a night by the end of 2021, this resulted in a series of sold out shows across the country and hundreds of thousands of streams across digital streaming platforms.

Previous singles ‘2020’, ‘Cover Me’ and ‘Lines’ received relentless support from BBC IntroducingBBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Spotify’s Fresh FindsHot New Bands and The Indie List. The band also recently supported Wolf Alice and have appeared at Liverpool Sound City, Tramlines and Kendal Calling.

The ‘Polar States’ EP is out now.

About Polar States After a demo was picked up by Coldplay producer Jon Withnall, Polar States found themselves being played on BBC Radio 1 before they’d even had a chance to cut their teeth live. They spent the tail-end of 2021 touring the UK, with sold out shows in London, Manchester and their hometown, Liverpool. It all began when singer Paul and guitarist Josh met one December evening to discuss forming a band, finalising the plan when they got stuck in a lift together later that night, before climbing out in-between floors in a mission impossible-esque fashion. There’s still a raging debate as to who was Tom Cruise that night.Surreal incidents have continued to occur since Polar States’ inception, more recently a cat named Dust interrupted a recording session by jumping on the piano in the studio whilst they were recording the EP track of the same name. It’s enough to make you believe that the band’s glittering fate is written in the stars. “During lockdown, we pressed reset. We knew we didn’t want to look back. We spent nearly every minute of the day together, wrote a load of new songs and just found ourselves becoming really attached to what we’d made,” they explain. And so here it begins, 2022, the year Polar States stake their claim.
