“60’s style plucking and the back bone of drum and base are simply performed with the deep resonance of two players who don’t need to impress anyone anymore”
The Irish must have been there at the beginning, when someone inadvertently decided to whistle a tune and realised there could be something in it for the masses and the elite alike and carrying on that tradition of staring the public in the eye with words and music, is a second offering from Dublin band, Silverbacks
Pronounced and solid, this album, Archive Material releases yet more distinct and rousing tracks that quickly set a pace and never relinquish their grip on your hand, dragging you effortlessly through their number without letting you settle or catch your breath. Unapologetically the album mentions the unmentionable Covid pandemic in different ways and sheds the skin of honesty all over the subject. I don’t mind that, it is current, topical and mainly, forever here, a bit like love lost that so many artists write about.
Lou Reed and David Byrne-esq, the vocals play an instrument that at times is droll and at others humorous, while a rangy guitar sweeps through with unabashed 60’s style plucking and the back bone of drum and base are simply performed with the deep resonance of two players who don’t need to impress anyone anymore. I like the pop song length of most of the songs and applaud their ‘straight at you’ style that sits well in the whole structure of its overall character. An album worthy of that first Irish whistler and an album definitely worthy of your ear.
