Amiable sonic disruptors Roxy Girls, fresh out of Sunderland (UK), kick out the jams with their no nonsense four track compact EP “Roxy Girls Are In The Drink” where space being at a premium they proceed to wring the living daylights out of every phrase, lick and beat as positive sparks of creativity collide with each other with a serious intensity recalling the free form spirit of improv once reserved for the likes of The Magic Band.
Coming out on Moshi Moshi records and weighing in at somewhere in the ballpark of ten minutes there is a frenetic urgency and haste to all things here with time signatures thrown about like confetti and norms and conventions totally disregarded in what is in essence a guitar orientated indie affair. In times yet to pass could it be that the wise will look back and hail “Roxy Girls Are In The Drink” as a classic? Well right here, right now I’m sticking my neck out and tagging this EP as seriously good, So yeah.. there is that possibility (and that’s on my own non-specific scale from not good at all, through quite good and all the way up to seriously good. Other measures are available).
Well obviously I like it, but why wouldn’t I; because what Roxy Girls are giving us here is a perfect antidote to the sludge loads of pop pap mediocrity that so many of their peers are pumping out by the terabyte. What Roxy Girls make is “independent of anything” type indie which this release confirms in one gloriously brain battering fell swoop restoring my appetite for envelope pushing new music.
Not for the faint hearted “Roxy Girls Are In The Drink” reminds us of just how exciting guitar composition really can be and why it matters in the first place. Highly recommended for sonic alchemists everywhere. Absolutely love it. Stand out track “My New Home”.
