Last month Toronto’s PACKS announced their debut LP Take The Cake, and their signing to Fire Talk Records (Dehd, Patio, Mamalarky) and Royal Mountain Records (Wild Pink, Alvvays, Mac DeMarco) who will release the record on May 21st. The album was announced with the single “Silvertongue,” which caused considerable excitement, earning comparisons to Pavement, Sonic Youth and Best Coast from outlets like Stereogum, Exclaim and So Young, and best of the week nods from NPR, BrooklynVegan, Gorilla vs Bear and Paste. Today the band sharing their second single from the LP, “New TV,” which is premiering today with The FADER.
Singles per se, are not an indication of where an artist necessarily wants to plant their feet, but it is a spot on the map of their very own island that can be a lone path or a road with many stops. Toronto based band, Packs, have given us a stripped back, Indie style ditty , ‘New TV’ that favours both of those choices. It is the second single from their debut album ‘Take the cake’ that is to be released very soon and crafted from a genuine guitar riff, the song is fun, catchy and full of life, in essence, short and sweet. Madeline Link and her vocals sit perfectly in this very vein and the simple laid back atmosphere creep around your senses like a new found friend would, excited, different and seriously likeable. New TV blows fresh air into that balloon that is so often filled with musical gas and sends it skyward, clearing the trees, breaking free and soaring to who knows where.
