REVIEW – THE CLOCKWORKS 'ENOUGH IS NEVER ENOUGH' – NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO

Single released 6th November 2020 on Creation 23 records

Sniffed out by the might of Alan McGee’s nose (he who brought us Oasis, Primal scream and The libertines) and signed to his Creation 23 label at first sight The Clockworks, hailing from Galway in the hip west of Ireland, are a genuinely exciting new indie post punk four piece and their latest outing gives us the impressive and raw “Enough is Never Enough”. Accompanied by a superb “socially distanced video”, “Enough is Never Enough” is straight outta lockdown, shot as it is in a four paned format down the garages at the bottom of the estate (10 points for Oscar J Ryan who directed that), and perfectly showcases what is fundamentally a social / political commentary on divided society.

So the actual song is good. It’s really good. It’s authentic, urgent and relevant. It’s confident, competent and cool and it’s definitely going places. What you get is bags of choppy guitars, pounding drums throughout, brilliant song writing and phrasing all wrapped up in just a smidge over 3 minutes. That’s indie right there in a nutshell. The beauty of “Enough is never enough” is that it so totally speaks of 2020 to 2020. It is very “now” and that’s what probably pricked up McGee’s ears at the outset. Yes, Alan uses all his senses when he’s scouting. He’d probably tell you that he could “feel the quality” too.

The Clockworks are definitely on my watch list for 2021. Previous singles ‘Can I Speak To A Manager?’ and’ ‘The Future Is Not What It Was’ received praise on BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac on her “New Names” showcase, BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq on his ‘Recommends’ show, received day-time radio play on RTÉ 2FM, and impressed the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer on Sirius XM. And I absolutely agree with their press blurb which proposes that they “pair snarling kitchen sink commentary with insurpressible sonic tenacity”. “The Clockworks are a band to savour in these dark days” they say. I’ll subscribe to that Harry.
