Whether cries from the heart or cries from the couch, they all count and honey-voiced sage, Rianne Downey sets her hard-won wisdom on beating the hangover blues to music in new single, Devil’s Gonna Get You. Turning the hell of the morning after the night before into a positive in a gritty cut of homespun pop, Downey’s latest single with Run On Records in assoc. with Modern Sky arrives on the eve of her biggest live shows to date, including an inevitably raucous Glasgow homecoming.
Fearlessly writing from the heart and head, 22-year-old Downey’s experiences of doubt, rebellion and thrill-seeking pour as readily into her songs as the fizz that poured into every, regrettable glass that led to the single’s creation. Describing, vividly, the recognisable fear that comes with lack of sleep and loss of control, Devil’s Gonna Get You was written as a silver-lining to an otherwise painful, but all too common experience.
Reflecting on the single, Downey says: “The song was born out of a hangover for the ages! It’s a song about over indulgence and facing the consequences of your actions, when ‘the fear’ hits you and the demons are in. You’ve traded a few hours of numbing the pain with alcohol for mental torture. There was nothing more positive to do than to take my pain and turn it into something good. This song is a reminder that the pain doesn’t last even if we choose to do it to ourselves again.”
Heading into Coastal Sound Studios, Liverpool with James Skelly to record her first new music of 2022, and the first since the runaway success of her sell-out debut Fuel To The Flame EP, Downey’s dark turn was a natural step. Whilst inspired forever by the likes of Amy Winehouse and the towering feminine strength of Dolly Parton, Downey’s musical inspirations cross the finish line second, beaten into first by the influence of real-life experiences, both good and bad, that swirl around the sensitive singer-songwriter every day.
Following her own debut, headline tour last year, hitting festival stages for the first time and being invited to support the likes of The Snuts, The Lathums and The Coral, Downey steps out to play her biggest shows to date this spring. The full run of dates confirmed are as follows:
