Scouting For Girls Bring Their Latest Album To Manchester Academy November 8th 2023

WORDS AND IMAGES RHYS GROVER

Scouting For Girls have been around some time now, and it’s always good to see bands who have had plenty of time to hone their talents. They’ve recently supported Olly Murrs on a tour earlier this year too, so were riled and ready to go for this tour, and the night was all the better for it.

Two support bands filled the opening slots, Anni Pohto and D3LTA. Both put on a fantastic set, and audience participation grew with each passing track from both artist. D3LTA particularly put on a fantastic show which the audience adored. There were clearly already a few of their fans scattered around the crowd, but by the end of their set, it’s safe to say their fan base definitely increased by a significant number. Well selected support acts can sometimes make the evening, and when the acts are capable of getting the crowd primed and ready, it just makes it all the better.

Scouting For Girls must be one of the most punctual bands in music. As soon as clocks flicked to 9pm, they hit the stage to a raucous noise from the crowd. The stage was decorated with the odd little eye catcher (a stuffed lion on the amp stack for example), and the lighting set up was superb for the audience. It’s easy to be drawn in by bands like this though. Charismatic frontmen and quality tunes will always draw attention from any crowd. Roy Stride was in fine form, leading the band through the set with a sublime attitude and perfect ability to wrap the crowd around his finger. I suppose you could say he took it in his stride (I’ll see myself out). This tour is in support of their latest album, ‘The Place We Used To Meet’, and it was tracks from this which, as you would expect, held a near enough majority place in the setlist, but plenty of old favourites and their big tracks from the early days made up the rest of the night. Getting ‘This Aint A Love Song’ in the first three was a nice touch whilst in the photo pit. The biggest (and arguably best) was saved til last though, and it’s this track really that has brought them back into the mainstream over recent months, as it sparked debate on TikTok with fans disagreeing about the lyrics.

‘She’s So Lovely’ went down an absolute storm, but even with the recent clarification from the band to settle the argument on lyrics, you could still hear the odd person singing the lyrics slightly incorrectly. I’m still not sure if it’s “I Wonder” or “I want her”, but that takes nothing away from how incredible the night was. Roy claims it’s ‘I wonder’, which does make more sense.
