“A slice of pure sunshine” – NME

Shelter Boy has shared smooth new single ‘I Stand With You’.

An emotional plea lyrically, this new number continues the laidback sonic direction of previous single, boy pablo collaboration ‘Terrace’, as percussion takes centre stage alongside a mirage of funk-leaning guitars and Simon Graupner’s quintessential chasmic vocals. A track with a message: “I’m here with you, but get yourself together!”, whether a plea to a friend or even to yourself, it’s a sentiment many of us can relate to.

Detailing it further, the musician explains, “‘I Stand With You’ was the last one I wrote for the album. I felt a bit exhausted because I had a lot of stuff to do in that time. I wrote that song as a pointerfinger to myself. Living with your art/music/whatever, feels like a pendulum, either you’re on a high or a low, and I think it’s ones task to be not to eccentric about it and calm a bit down sometimes. Not alone for me but also for the people round me that I love.”

‘I Stand With You’ follows on from Shelter Boy’s mammoth collaboration with internet sensation, and dream pop juggernaut, boy pablo. A laidback slacker indie pop number on the surface, it also delved into funk territory with free-flowing synths as critical acclaim from the likes of NMEThe i PaperDIYThe Independent and Dork rolled in for the song.

Both tracks are taken from the German musician’s debut album, Failure Familiar, which is due for release on the 10th September via Manchester-based label Scruff Of The Neck. The record will also feature previous singles ‘Absence’, ‘Atmosphere’, ‘Forever You’ll Be Known’ and ‘Calm Me Down’.

The Leipzig musician is quickly establishing himself as one of Germany’s standout songwriters of his generation and after already drawing comparisons to King Krule for his vocal delivery. Previous single ‘Absence’ showcased a breezy indie dream-pop instrumental much akin to the likes of The Drums and Mac DeMarco making it a strong contender for uplifting anthem of the summer, and ‘Failure Familiar’ looks to carry on flying that flag straight into Autumn.

‘I Stand With You’ is out now and ‘Failure Familiar’ is released on 10th September 2021 both via Scruff Of The NeckPre-order Failure Familiar here.
