Southern Rockers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant Pay Homage to Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis with Single, “Sweet Florida” As An Anthem for Freedom-Loving Floridians

Team DeSantis

This past April, Jacksonville natives, Johnny Van Zant, the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his brother Donnie Van Zant of 38 Special wrote a tribute song titled “Sweet Florida” in honor of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s leadership throughout the COVID pandemic.

“For them to do this is really, really special. I think they did a great job,” Governor DeSantis said during an appearance with the Van Zant brothers on Fox & Friends.

The Van Zant brothers were inspired to write “Sweet Florida” as an anthem for freedom-loving Floridians who support Governor DeSantis and wanted to thank the Governor for not caving to the demands of “health experts” who seemed more interested in politicizing the pandemic than actually following the science.

As the song’s lyrics state:

 We’re doing alright

In the Sunshine State

Stay out of our business

Leave our gov alone

Down in Sweet Florida

Our governor is red, white, and blue

Down in Sweet Florida

He’s shootin’ us straight and telling us the truth

“We gotta thank Governor DeSantis for standing and believing what he believes,” said Johnny Van Zant during his appearance on Fox & Friends in April. “He stands for everything that we believe. He’s been a great Governor for us.”

By Johnny’s own admission, the song was written in just a couple of hours and the Van Zant brothers took a chance by sending an early version that was recorded on an iPhone to the Governor. Fortunately, DeSantis liked what he heard.

“After I was in the studio, I’m leaving and it starts playing in my head! I played it for my wife and kids and my five-year-old daughter sings it. That’s how you know you’ve got a winner on your hands!”

The song, which has been viewed well over half a million times on Rumble, and is available for download on Spotify and Apple Music quickly rose to the top of the charts and was number two on iTunes.

Aside from the song being very catchy, it no secret why the song resonated with so many people, not just in Florida, but around the world.

The state of Florida is stronger today because of Governor DeSantis. And the numbers don’t lie: Floridians support Governor DeSantis and his freedom agenda because policy and leadership matter. As the Van Zant brothers wrote:

Well, we ain’t been locked down

We still have our freedom

We can still see our friends and family

Oh, our kids are in school

And we can go to church on Sunday

And it’s all because DeSantis knows how to lead!
