Caroline Van der Leeuw’s transformation from the voice of the chart-topping Caro Emerald to her artistic identity as The Jordan has been a journey of self-discovery. From the assertion of ‘You Don’t Even Know Me’ to her celebration of new beginnings with ‘Best Damn Day’The Jordan’s first releases have been defined by her bravery to present music which isn’t afraid to draw a line under the past and step confidently into a very different future.

That attitude of empowerment, vulnerability and pure honesty comes across more powerfully than ever as The Jordan now shares the new track ‘I’m Not Sorry’. The track is the latest song to preview her debut album, ‘Nowhere Near The Sky’, which follows on February 10th.

‘I’m Not Sorry’ declares The Jordan’s new-found independence and burns all of the bridges behind her as her ominous, semi-whispered vocal declares, “I’m not sorry for bruising your ego, I’m not sorry for breaking your will, I’m not sorry for not asking for forgiveness.” Sonically it’s a step aside from the trip-hop stylings, its unsettling, gothic-tinged intensity simmering with the kind of unforgiving ire that dares you to answer back.

The Jordan says, “‘I’m Not Sorry’ is written for everyone out there who’s tired of apologising. Who’s tired of feeling guilty. And who’s tired of taking the blame. We are not selfish, we just know what we want and we’re not sorry.”

Caroline wrote the song with its producer Wouter Hardy (aka solo artist HRDY) with contributions from Wieger Hoogendorp and Guus van der SteenDavid Kosten (Bat For LashesEverything Everything, Chris Martin) provided additional production, and it was completed with mixing courtesy of Cenzo Townshend, the two-time winner of The Music Producers Guild’s award for Best Mix Engineer.

Caroline Van der Leeuw achieved great success with Caro Emerald, but eventually felt confined by the project as she grew weary of worrying about her image and the commercial considerations that came with it. Instead she freed her mindset from such thoughts and new songs flowed out like never before. Centred around reflections upon the past and ruminations of who she currently is, their lyrics collectively told the story of someone racing through the crossroads and never looking back. The music was at once also darker and more intimate, moving freely between ‘90s trip-hop, folktronica and the current alt-pop scene. And so The Jordan emerged – Caroline’s vocal elegance now bathed in a markedly different soundscape.

Stepping out in the world, The Jordan is now being discovered by fans across the world – particularly in The Netherlands, where ‘Best Damn Day’ is proving to be a huge airplay hit. She has also introduced The Jordan’s live experience, with a dramatic, orchestra-accompanied performance on the nation’s  leading TV show Matthijs Gaat Door and also with an NPO Radio 2 session.
