UK headline tour dates through October

The Lounge Society have announced a new single, “Last Breath”, ahead of their upcoming run of headline UK tour dates.

“Last Breath” is the first new music from the band since their acclaimed debut EP Silk For The Starving took chunks out of small-town mentalities, swung angrily at a negligent political class, and chided the noxious follow-the-leader march of celebrity culture. Throughout the EP, the looming spectre of a fast-fragmenting society was targeted with a songwriting maturity that belied the band’s young age, fearless in its variety and unpredictability, and simultaneously landed blows via punk-funk, psychedelic rock, post-punk and garage rock. As “Last Breath” emerges, the band appear seemingly bound by one ideal – never to repeat themselves.

Certain attributes remain – the fleet-footed guitar and drum motifs, along with singer Cameron Davey’s intriguing vocal style that switches from languid falsetto to bite-and-bark. However, on top of popping electronics, the song’s darker undercurrent lacerates the music’s brighter moments, as they dissect simmering feelings of life, freedom and fun being wrenched away by powers beyond our control. It is the defiance in the song’s message, and its mantra “I will spend my last breath singing” that turns helplessness into power, and chooses to have the last laugh, rather than burn a raging fire.

This rip-it-up-and-start-again approach with producer Dan Carey has ultimately shone an understanding on the idea that, in the same way that different conversations take a different tone depending on the subject, with each new release The Lounge Society can find an opportunity to respond to an evolving conversation in their own ever-evolving way. They stride forward with the idea that when there’s something new to say, say it in a new way. Having introduced themselves as an articulate, enraged and energised voice, here they continue to evolve and demonstrate that their horizons are as wide as those across the Calder Valley they call home.

The band comments: “Last Breath is a symbol of defiance, of wanting to party on even as the walls close in around you. It’s that “one last drink, one more song” feeling condensed into 3 minutes of our music. A moment of hedonism even as people try to take it away from you. It’s a song for a time when youth (and the energy that comes with it) is once again under attack from those who find change threatening, and it’s aimed at their necks. It’s also just meant to be a banger.

With Last Breath, we took everything we knew about the process of recording music and ripped it up. We broke our own rules, and we broke Dan’s rules. It was more than worth it – what we ended up with is a dark and twisted pop groove. We hope you enjoy.”

The Lounge Society hail from the Pennine towns of Hebden Bridge and Todmorden in the Calder Valley of West Yorkshire. There the rain falls two hundred days a year upon the moss-draped, post-industrial ruins, the clouds scud overhead at speed and up on the heathered moor-tops carrion crows hungrily peck at the skulls of dead sheep. “Our lyrics are a call-to-arms for people who share our dismay at the dismal future being carved out for people like us. We want each line to be a brick through the window of just the right people. There is an anger in the lyrics because we are angry, but we are angry at how fucked the world has become. Our anger is not just speculative. We want to do our part in setting things right, little by little, and music is a tried and tested means of doing that.” If this is the case then The Lounge Society are going down swinging with a glorious soundtrack that could only be made in the here and the now. Make no mistake, this is the sound of young England: articulate, enraged and energised. And – perhaps crucially – highly danceable too. It should give hope to anyone who has lost faith in the future, because here the future is in safe hands.
