“ANOTHER STATE”

Torquay based five piece band Tourists, have it seems an ear for the sublime and the dark of the electronic era that populated the musical world during the seventies and eighties with bands like Depeche Mode, Joy Division and The Cure. Deep rooted affection for this sound is embedded in their debut album, Altered State. It is plain to see that this multi layered, perfectly produced collection of dream like tracks is not only a homage to that sound, but actually a newly found, inspired and personal breath of fresh air.

No disrespect to the originals, and I mean that as a huge fan. This album rises triumphant, with real drums, real bass and a real sense of longing, that leaves you wistfully staring at fish swimming in a tank as I found myself! Exquisite pop laced melodies fear nothing as they dance along effortlessly within each track joining haunting vocals that carry emotionally charged lyrical musings squarely on the sleeve.

Beautifully crafted and expertly produced, “Another State”, dismisses the notion that certain musical genres can’t grow or be improved upon, without destroying the very essence of its historical character. Deeply personal and layered with love, this album sits perfectly conjoined with the artists and music of that era with a big slapdash smile on its face and definitely a big tip of the hat if in fact it was wearing one.

Tourists wrote and recorded their debut album “Another State” during 2018 in the seclusion and solace of their Torquay rehearsal space. Cut off from the world and the pressures of working in a studio, they successfully achieved what they set out to do, to capture the atmosphere and energy of their live sets but within a tranquil setting. The band then decamped to Brooklyn to work with producer Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, DIIV) in 2019, before mastering the record with Simon Heyworth (Brian Eno, Imogen Heap, Nick Cave) of Super Audio Mastering.
