Victor Wainwright and his band, The Train boogied through St. Petersburg, Florida Friday night at The Palladium showing the crowd his “Piana from Savannah” trademark Hammond B3 style while fronting an absolutely top notch band. The Train consisting of Billy Dean on drums, Terrence “Sweet Tea” Grayson on Bass, Doug Woolverton on Trumpet, Mark Earley on Sax and last but not least Pat Harrington on guitar backed Wainwrights Blusey boogie boogie style all night.
Wainwright’s setlist sampled from his 2019 Grammy Nominated album Victor Wainwright & the Train. 3 new cuts ( Mississippi, Walk the Walk and Memphis Loud ) from Memphis Loud, Wainwrights newest album released in April 2020 were enthusiastically received by the crowd. Because of COVID last year shutting down live music nationally Friday night was only the third time the band has played them live.
The highlight for many was the emotional tribute to BB King , Thank You Lucille. The horns, the searing BB like guitar work by Pat Harrington and the emotion in which Victor sings this song made this song the highlight of the night.
Victor Wainwright is a keyboard master, who sings with emotion and depth and whose smile and expressions make it obvious he loves what he does. Coming back to St Pete to play in front of a lot of old friends made Victor happy, his smile giving it away. This band and it’s live performance should not be missed.
