New York indie juggernauts We Are Scientists have teased more new material from their forthcoming record with a dazzling single ‘Lucky Just To Be Here’

Reducing the tempo but ratcheting the intensity, the new track simmers before it boils, offering a contrast to the two breakneck tunes already released from the pair’s recently announced eighth studio album, ‘Lobes’ (due on 20th January 2023 via 100% Records).

“When people think about We Are Scientists — and they often do — they probably think about danceable beats, anthemic sing-along choruses, and the greatest, most energetic live shows they‘ve had the good fortune to attend. What they’re perhaps less likely to think of are aching, bittersweet ruminations on time’s relentless chisel-work or the pang of instant nostalgia that comes as our lives our hewn, with each passing moment. I mean, they probably don’t think of those things, with us, right? Well, ‘Lucky Just To Be Here’ may just change that for a lot of listeners. The song is a rare moment of quiet for us, although, yes, it does still eventually explode with the sort of exhilarating bombast upon which we’ve built our reputation, so fans who fear the sort of existential change that this song confronts can rest assured that some things — some essential things, like We Are Scientists’ unrestrained vitality — remain constant.”

‘Lucky Just To Be Here’ is the next single to be revealed from the aforementioned record ‘Lobes’, which is the band’s second self-produced outing. ‘Lobes’ is available to pre-order here.

We Are Scientists will also be heading out on the road, completing an extensive tour of the UK and Europe in support of the record throughout February, March and April 2023. Recently announced dates for the ‘Show Lobes’ tour include a London headline show at the recently relaunched KOKO in Camden on 3rd March. Today they’re also sharing which support acts will be joining them on the road – Eevah will warm up the crowd in Manchester whilst Bleach Lab will join the bill from Glasgow to London, Cherym will appear in Belfast and Dublin, and Liz Lawrence will play before the duo across Europe.

The upcoming new album follows on from the weighty indie rock masterpiece HUFFY (2021), and whilst the origins of songs written for ‘Lobes’ began around the same time, the impression so far suggests they grew into an entirely different musical universe. The album’s lead single ‘Operator Error‘ and follow-up ‘Less From You’ are an exciting taste of the fresh direction expected on ‘Lobes’, and have already received praise in the UK from the likes of the BBC and NME.

‘Lobes’ by We Are Scientists is due out 20th January 2023 via 100% Records. Pre-order the album here.
