WORDS AND IMAGES BY DESH KAPUR
I had the great pleasure of being at the O2 Academy Liverpool for a night with the brilliant Wet Leg
But first up was west London rapper, singer and artist Lava La Rue, playing a set full of crisp guitar riffs, funky baselines and synths, held together by Lava La Rue’s sultry vocals and rapping that was reminiscent of Little Simz, a great start to the evening
Wet Leg are a British duo formed in 2019 and the brainchild of long-time friends Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, who both hail from the sunny Isle of Wight.
The two young ladies from Wet Leg take the stage followed by their band, and the noise is deafening, and I look round to take it in I’m blown away by the different types of people that are here, and the ages range from young teenagers to people in their 50’s, mass appeal indeed,
I have seen Wet Leg a few times at festivals and in support of other bands and it always makes me smile at the incredulous looks on their faces, as if they couldn’t quite believe that they were stepping onto a stage in front of 1.500 people, cheering and shouting their names. at the same time seeming to enjoy every minute of it.
They kick the night off with “Being in Love” and my personal favourite song “Wet Dream” and the tone is set,
Tonight, the girls play pretty much the entirety of their debut number 1 album, but there are a couple of new songs given an airing tonight, even one with the shy Hester singing, and even though her vocals were a little quiet you could hear there is a lovely voice there.
Wet Leg have their own unique take on Indie Post-Punk, jangly and sharp guitar riffs, with lyrics that are witty, incisive, tongue-in-cheek and laden with double entendre with an underlying biting edge.
Wet Legs set was short, sharp, straight to the point and very, very good. I like this band a lot, not just because they are the latest buzz band, or the fact they were signed to the legendary record label, Domino (Artic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand) after only two songs, but because, their songs are imaginative, completely irresistible and fresh
