With a little over a month to go until new album Paragon Songs, Whenyoung – Aoife Power and Andrew Flood – share new single ‘Rubik’s Cube’, another taster of what’s to come. Paragon Songs is out 7th April 2023. Pre-order HERE.
Aoife says of the track, “Ruminating is similar to the mechanics of a Rubik’s cube in the sense that the mind can brood over one problem until it’s solved but there always seems to be another unsolved part on the other side, waiting. We composed this song by treating each section as a different side of the cube and each instrument as a square within that side, eventually coming to a resolution at the end. A bed of piano, synth and kick are carried along by interspersed guitar parts and soaring pop melodies.”
Whenyoung recently did a cover of The Last Of Us featured ‘Long Long Time’ by Linda Ronstadt, which has racked up an impressive 72,000 views on TikTok.
New album Paragon Songs is an exploratory journey through the dark depths of self-criticism, rises into an ambition for change and a desire to welcome healing and self-love – it’s a self-help and rite of passage album. It was written between a cottage in County Clare on the West coast of Ireland, and in a flat on a street called Paragon on the East coast of England.
It begins in the pain of an old narrative, arcs in the possibility of change and resolves in intention. Aoife elaborates, “Every step is a new time in your existence and noting it down marks it, celebrates it and reveals you to yourself. These lyrics represent who I am right now or who I’ve been the past year or two. My intention is to like myself and be kinder to myself. And so I can only present myself in the state that I am currently in which is healing not healed”
They’ve already shared tracks ‘A Little Piece Of Heaven’, ‘The Laundress’, ‘Unchained’, and ‘Shame Train’ from the album, and April sees the pair set off on a UK/IRE tour with tickets on-sale now here, plus they’ve added an album release show at Ramsgate Music Hall taking place on 7th April.
