Young Knives‘ forthcoming album, Landfill, set for release on January 24, 2025, via Gadzook, marks a significant evolution in the band’s sonic landscape. Known for their eclectic blend of post-punk and indie rock, the duo—comprising brothers Henry and Thomas Bonsu-Dartnall—delve into introspective themes, exploring the concepts of legacy and self-definition.

The album’s title, Landfill, serves as a self-aware commentary on the decline of indie music and the band’s own apprehensions about obsolescence. Henry Dartnall explains, “It’s a record about letting things go before they are taken from you, including the carefully curated images of ourselves. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart.”

The lead single, “Dissolution,” exemplifies this thematic exploration. Inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy quote, “Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so,” the track juxtaposes profound concepts with playful elements. Dartnall notes, “I just wanted to experiment with doing our version of that. You can’t force ideas on people, you can just suggest them and leave them hanging in a way that people might one day consider if they feel like it.”

Musically, Landfill traverses a diverse range of styles. The album features introspective songwriting, post-punk rhythms, and elements of spoken word. synths further enrich the soundscape, contributing to a complex and engaging listening experience.

In summary, Landfill represents a bold and introspective chapter in Young Knives’ discography, offering listeners a nuanced exploration of identity and legacy through a rich tapestry of musical styles.
