RELEASES SELF-PRODUCED DEBUT ALBUM ‘PLAZA’ VIA FRICTIONLESS MUSIC – 11TH FEB
THE RECORD ARRIVES ALONGSIDE SHOEGAZE SHOWSTOPPER ‘SUZANNE I’M SORRY’
‘Suzanne I’m Sorry’. A whirl of fuzzy guitar, perfectly reverberated vocals and celestial synths, it’s a prestigious soundtrack to the record’s summit. Hints of Southern’s biggest influences; My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr. and The Smashing Pumpkins, also make themselves known throughout its three and a half minutes of enchanting slacker rock.
Explaining ‘Suzanne I’m Sorry’ in more detail, Thom offers, “Lyrically I kept things very simple and to the point. Through the use of a song there is an apology, reaching out to an old love and trying to reconnect with that person. I recorded the track in my Liverpool apartment along with the other tracks on my debut album with some minimal recording gear to keep things raw and meaningful.”

10 tracks of bewitching shoegaze and captivating slacker rock all crafted and created by the multi-talented musician make up the milestone body of work from Thom, who has yielded praise from the likes of Clash Magazine, BBC Introducing, Radio X, Hot Press Magazine, BBC Radio Ulster, RTE and KCRW in Los Angeles.
It arrives alongside visuals that pay tribute to Southern’s humbling busking beginnings in Belfast city centre when he was just a teenager. “I want to give a nod to where it all started for me in Belfast as I release my debut album.”
Hailing from Belfast, singer-songwriter Thom recently shared singles ‘Tongue Tied’ and ‘She’s So Precious’, which took things up a notch for the exciting alternative songwriter by showcasing a unique brand of shoegaze influenced alt-indie pop at its very best, packed with baggy acoustics, fuzzy guitar hooks, hypnotic drums and sweet melodic vocals.
Inspired by artists like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Ride, The War On Drugs, (Sandy) Alex G, Beck and The American Analog Set, ‘Plaza’ is the result of a prolific time for the musician in 2021, as he further hones his craft not only as a songwriter but as a producer too.
At the tailend of last year, Thom warmed up for a headline run supporting Zuzu at her big hometown show at the O2 Academy 2 Liverpool on the 5th December. Now he’s gearing up to take his new album on the road for the first time with dates around the UK and Ireland to be announced in due course.
